So I wanna get my kid a decent graphics card for xmas and I don't know jack about 'em.

Is the AMD R9 380 a decent card for around 200 bucks?

I don't want to get him the best of the best, just something that'll let him play the new games decently well ...

it'll run any game, won't perform well in high settings for demanding titles

most kids play shit like League of Legends, Minecraft & Counterstrike - this card will run any game like that on high to max settings just fine (paired with a decent CPU)

I've got an R9 270X and it does 99% of games on high settings. I can't crank it all the way up but I don't give a shit. Joraulit is right, buy a R9 290X if you can afford it.

no the 380 isn't worth it, it will feel as if a jet is going to take of yeah its noisy as fuck and gets heated up pretty bad.
instead buy 280 and ofc 290x is the beast but it will cost around $400-$600...

280 is cheaper and can run any game on high settings as well.

Is a 970 my best option if I only have a 550W power supply? I don't want to upgrade my power supply just yet, and am looking for something in the $200-300 range. Currently have a 560Ti, looking for something to hold me over until the next generation of cards in about 2 years.

Yeah it's a great card. You can also pick a GTX 960 for around the same price. It is more power efficient and has better temps.
