ITT Parent's hate me because I do Affilate Marketing Instead of a "Real" Job.

Anyone else deal with this? Have a site going that will pay for all my bills, etc but they don't understand the concept of making money online so they hate it... Just cleared $2K in my bank account the other night, but it doesn't matter unless it's a paper paycheck from a real desk job.

I have a 2nd "real" job doing marketing but I don't show up often since I can make more money at my home office. So they call me lazy.. But in reality, I've been doing 12 hour days working on my site/online goals. Even when I had a physical $500 paper Adsense check from years ago it wasn't a "good job" moment..

I'm an adult now, 25.. And I still get bitched out.

How old are you? I imagine the only way you'll be able to shut them up is if and when you're earning more than them. Congrats on the $2k milestone, btw.

The best day of my life was when I realized it didn't matter what anybody else, including my friends or family thought about my career choice. Better yet, It doesn't matter what anybody else things about yourself other than YOU.

25, thanks man! Yeah I have no doubt I will be able to surpass their income.. One site alone I'm working on it's projected to do that in the next 2-3 years at the most. I think they won't accept it until I can turn it into a household brand.. I wish they respected my courage to do something most people would never do in a lifetime.. Building a business on your own is so demanding and requires more motivation than imaginable..

Ah, still young in their eyes, then. Congrats on you for not caving in to their pressure, though. I've to agree with jeffrey, as long as you're happy with your path then do not let anyone discourage you. You don't need anyone's approval as long as you're happy with your decision.

You could always just pull a Mgrunin and pay off their mortgage in the future. That should keep them quiet.

It could be that they have no confidence in your abilities, expect you to fail, and want to spare you the embarassment.

Don't get angry, get even. Have you heard of Jake Evans?

Yeah, you should just do like me and waste 7 years in university for your parents expectations before you say 'fuck it' and go do your thing.

My family used to do that to me, but I think it was mainly out of ignorance and jealousy. First time was from one of my sister-in-laws. I was making more than double my dad who was an Exxon exec on international assignments, but according to her it didn't really count, because it wasn't a "real" business. Apparently, you need a shop and work trucks for it to be a "real" business.

I let it get it to me that time, then a few years later my other sister-in-law chimed in with some ignorant statement like that during a family dinner. I got pissed off, used a few choice words, and nobody in my family has said anything about it since. :)

I must be lucky because my parents where all for working for yourself, not not being a normal joe schmo, it's actually encouraged.

You're 25 and your parents still treat you like you're 18.

I blame you for not establishing yourself as an adult. No 25 year old should have these problems. Grow a pair of balls and act like you've been alive for two and a half decades.

Grow a pair. Unless you left out some facts... Like that you still rely on them for certain things?

i do not understand... you have 2k total? or make that in a day?

if you live at home they want you to move out... thats why they want you to get a real job

If you've only made $2k total I'd say you are not ready to ditch a 9-5.

When I made the leap (well I've never had a 9-5, but when I was completely committed to never working for anyone else event) I was already making 4 figures per day. It is not a decision you make lightly or with no real plan.

yea, it sounds like you live at home...

I left home at 19 for college and I've been living on my own since I was 21. My parents (who are in no way laid back) gave up on trying to run my life somewhere around the age of 17.

tldr; you're prolly acting like a kid, not a man
