-Joe-'s newbie journal.

Hi Joe, Good on you for getting started at your age. I have been working on trying to improve conversion rates, and it does take time. But if your conversion rates were low initially, then went up, there is a need to figure out why it improved. Only then can you get better at it.
I tried AdMob, and spent heaps on it without much return. And dont have much control over it, so stopped. I guess what I am trying to say is: if its costing lots and there is not way of figuring out which one works and which doesnt, its just spending money without gain.
Good luck with your IM. :)

Just had a big row with my dad about me spending my day doing IM instead of reading A level textbooks... "/ He had the same old usual rant, about how much more work he does than me, (although he's spent 90% of today lying in bed, and all of yesterday) Called IM just a "paid hobby, in fact not even paid" and how I have half term, and it's a holiday for me, but he has to work tomorrow (isn't that the point of a holiday? Doesn't he get them?) although I WILL be doing AM all week, and door-to-door double glazing job on the days I can.. He complains all the time about me not making supper, but when he makes it, it's only taking something out of a packet, putting it in the oven, putting it on a plate...

Heh I totally understand how you feel.. most parents and adults seem to think they are always right.. but what they fail to realize is we are already living in a much different era.. they think that getting a good education and degree is the only or easiest way to earn a good 5 figure income because in their era, that was what happened to their friends who managed to get into university and they didnt

That being said most of the time your parents say that because they are ultimately concerned about you and have your interests at heart.. so sometimes we gotta just ignore or tolerate them for a while..

Hey Shane, thanks :)

Yeah, I think it was just due to the opening the floodgates with traffic (to let a slightly bigger trickle in!) I've dropped that offer now, though, too annoying to promote on Facebook, you can't adjust the demo, cause you've got to keep getting round their ad-checkers. Also, as the demo I started with was quite tight, I think it's gone stale now.

kk, and thanks for the advice on Admob. I guess I'll leave it alone then!

Thanks again :)

Hey, yeah thanks, I know. This video I saw recently really reflects my views on the education system. YouTube - RSA Animate - Changing Education Paradigms

and yeah, I guess. I'll be the one laughing when I'm earning more than him :)

Btw guys, sorry I haven't posted all week, was ill, throwing up. :( Over it now though, so yay! :) Didn't get to do any AM or door-to-door double glazing though, cause of it.

Decided to move onto dating, started at PlentyofFish with one of the few dating offers a4d lets anyone run without approval, since my AM doesn't work weekends. Grabbed some pics and started on a really wide demo - UK males, aged 18-24 who don't use safari (to try and filter out iphone traffic) with a single campaign, with 10 ads, all the same copy, different pictures. Once I find out which picture works best, I'll start just using that one or two, and refining my copy.

Gonna tighten the demo too, once I find out what converts. Set up tracking202, haven't used it before, looks good so far, if a little time-consuming.

Here's the stats from POF so far: (am I going the right way? it's been running a few hours, and is set to use up the budget as fast as possible, so I can get results.)

No sales so far.

EDIT: It's weird, looking at the images, one of the ones I didn't think'd do well is the best performing, at 0.282%. I guess it's cause her eyes are quite beady and she's staring.

Update time.
Decided to target a dating micro-niche on POF, and I've dropped the previous campaign, which wasn't really targeted at anyone. So far I'm down $100, but I've done a shitload of testing with that, so now I'm in a better position to make similar campaigns, and to improve the current one.

It started off with the best 2 ads (out of 70) converting at around 0.25% (A 0.1% improvement on some identical ads, with one word changed. Shows you the effect of words, eh?)

However, now I've started just running those 2, CTR has dramatically dropped. I don't know why, I'm targeting UK and Canada, and I reckon probably around 25% of the userbase in those 2 countries fits into my niche, maybe more.

Any suggestions? I've discovered I now have £20 in my bank account, so I'm gonna top that up with the money in my wallet, sell my old games consoles to a store near me, and ask A4d for a payout. I have $150 in there.

Here's my stats.
