Keyword Density Sensitivity - Too Late to Fix?

Sup yall.

This site was the first site I built so I was a bit naive and most of my pages have keyword density in the 3 to 5.5 % range for their target phrase. I've noticed that when I build links (only 3 or 4 quality links at a time, only branded and generic anchors) that the higher the keyword density of the page is for its target term, the more sensitive it is to these new links... and the less stable they seem to be in the serps over all.

Ranking #5, build a few solid links to the page, then bounce around from page 10 to page 3 for the next month or 2... Yet on a page with less keyword density I'll build 3 or 4 solid links, bounce around for a week then come back stronger.

So my question is...

Is it too late to fix the keyword density of the pages that are over-optimized? Does this just send a "I'm guilty" message to google? I'd really like to bring my keyword density more in line with the other pages in the serp and see if that makes me less sensitive to link building.

Or can I just go ahead and fix these pages?

any advice?

Definitely go ahead and correct the pages.
When creating your content you really should not have to even think about keyword density. Your target keywords will be mentioned and naturally flow regardless. So many factors (on site and off) are taken into consideration when deeming the relevance of a page, you really do not need to be thinking about keyword density. Keyword stuffing will more than likely cause poor conversions and get you slapped by the big G. Sort it out man.

Thanks guys,

To be honest it was not thinking of keyword density that got me into this problem in the first place. I never analyzed my pages, and I didn't realize what an acceptable or natural density was, these were some of the first pages I created...

I will admit though that while I was writing the pages, the thought was always in the back of my mind that I had to get the target phrase in here and there... I never realized what an effect this had. Now that I compare my pages to other pages across the net, my pages are clearly over-optimized.

Lesson learned.

Will fix, thanks for the help guys.

Wow, the content is so much better already...

For anyone that is interested... I will post an update here over the next month or so and let y'all know how this affects these pages in the serps.

I have had pages come back from over optimization. The rankings does not seem to be set in stone.

Obviously still pretty early...

Let's see if it finally gets past #20 and works it's way back to the front page.
