I was doing some keyword research with google keyword estimator, planning on using the results as ballpark estimates, but then I read that all the estimates are basically a piece of shit. So, are there any other (free) tools that give more accurate results, and should I just use my best judgment and run the campaign with around 50 keywords and tune from there? I'm also going to launch it on yahoo if that makes much of a difference. I figured the keywords wouldn't change much from engine to engine

The Google Adwords Keyword Tool estimates well for me if you choose exact match. Otherwise there's Wordtracker and KeywordDiscovery for free.

Where did you read that the estimates were shit? Some place selling wordtracker or wordze?

Like dan said, set it to exact match and you'll be all set. It's sure as shit better than the other crap tools.

i did a search on google's tool for "nintendo wii and wii"....for the majority of the keywords its said there was no competition. a quick search proved that wrong. I find it highly inaccurate, but a good tool for coming up with new keyword ideas.

The data is not "live". They are last months average numbers. But it is still Google's data.

Even though the results from Google Keyword Research may not be 100% accurate, it's still the best you can get to the actual amount. As several members had posted in this thread, you must choose exact match if you want as close to accurate results as possible. Though, even so; there are several large errors with the tool. As in not providing the correct competition value in most cases.

So what? Im sure there were advertisers for that niche last month, and if its still showing "no advertisers", then its still wrong.

The google keyword tool is not all bad; some key terms do show weird results. But the majority can actually be quite useful.

So basically, no one really credible, but it's advice nonetheless. I just want to minimize the amount of pain (understandably). Though, one problem I have with ppc is even shooting for a 1% conversation rate can be high for certain products.
