Working on getting my first campaign up right now and a book I read on LP design said that I should keep users with ALL resolutions in mind and therefore consider my fold at 300 pixels. However, the book was published in 2005.

It seems to me that if less than 1% of the internet has dinosaur 800x600 displays, I shouldn't concern myself with them and design with more modern technology in mind.

How many pixels do you consider to be "above the fold" when you design LPs?

I believe the most popular resolution currently is a height of 768px. so set your screen to that size, load up your browser, and print screen it and measure the viewing space for a web page.

using this method I got about 647px. Does that sound about right?

Install Web Developer toolbar Firefox add-on, it has a feature where it can resize your browser to various sizes.

Then when you finish the LP, put Analytics on it and see for yourself what kind of resolutions you get with your target audiences. Depending on your market, it may vary highly. E.g. if you are targetting younger gamers, they are surely to have high res, if you are targetting older people, who might have ancient computers, the resolution might be quite low, or just incorrectly configured, or taken up by 57 toolbars.
