(x-posted at DP, looking for more opinions)
Alright, so I am building a site with the intention of earning commissions via cj.com, with traffic driven from PPC like Adwords and some organic search as well. I have 2 specific affiliates in mind for my niche, and I am just trying to weigh the pros and cons of each before coming to a final decision.
My dilemna is this. I am either going to build a large site, filled with all of the affiliate's products (built from a data feed). To help my site stand out (and with organic search traffic), I would spotlight a new product everyday and try and presell the consumer on it.
The other route I am considering is to build my site around a couple of different products, and just try and presell them. This way, I would have no leaks or distractions on my landing pages, and I would optimize my Adwords campaign to very specific products. Going this route however, my site doesn't have much value as far as organic search rankings go, and I am not really looking to just make a quick buck from PPC driven affiliate marketing. I want to be in this for the long haul and be competitive within my niche.
So if I were to build the larger site, I would most likely send general "buying" searches there for my larger niche. I could experiment with sending more focused consumer traffic there, but I am worried that they may easily be distracted and not end up converting well at all. However, in the long run, this may be my best bet as far as the amount of traffic and commission I can generate.
I think that if I build the bigger site unique and personalized enough it won't feel like a cold, auto-generated directory. This way, I think I could actually get good conversions. Let's say someone comes to my site to buy a widget holder, browses for a bit, and finds a good, cheap widget cleaner and buys that. Not necessarily what they originally came looking for, but it still converts for me.
So my question is this: Have any of you found that with a large site such as the one I described that the PPC traffic gets distracted through all of the leaks and doesn't convert well? I know this is probably niche - specific and without me revealing my niche and actually testing the two approaches out I can't get a solid idea of how my traffic will convert. I just wanted to get a general idea of what other people have had success with, and maybe some warnings of problems with my plan ahead of time.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
