My little brush with the legal system has me wanting to protect my personal assets from greedy lawyers. I need to read up on LLCs and how they work. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Call your state's business administration and ask for more information. If you are lucky (like myself), you can get registered for about $150. If you are a minor, you will have to list a non-minor on your business's board of directors.

Maz: If you don't make over a couple thousand dollars in reportable income through the LLC, it's just a $252 business tax. I assume, based on the blog that alexb runs, that he doesn't make enough to have to pay taxes on it through the LLC.

You should also check your state's minimum annual tax. For example, in California it's $800 minimum even if you don't make a penny.

I've noticed being incorporated is a huge hassle, no matter where you are.
There's endless paper work just to run things like you've always done it. Technically, you need a (board of) director(s), even if it's just you, to be the fall guy in case something goes wrong, etc etc etc.
Not to mention setup fees. To do it on my own, through Victoria's or NSW's Chamber of Commerce costs $1700. For $500 extra, they'll do the hard work for me and I just have to sign some documents. There's probably a similar deal going with your local Chamber of Commerce, or whatever it's called over there.

Ahh man it so is.

Wait till you get employees man then it really sucks.

12 months in year = 12 federal and 12 state tax deposites = pay 24x for each employee.

Then for each partner in company you have 4 quarterly payments , so add that in. Then you get into your county property tax and then all your license dues.

Ooops almost forgot end of year filings as well.

God damn we suck at taxes.
