Why do redditors believe that internet savyness and intelligence go hand in hand. It is only because you are familiar with internet culture and advertising that such an ad seems "stupid" and "obvious". Think for a moment about who this ad is appealing to- middle aged women, all of whom grew up without the internet, and a significant minority of which have avoided it like a plague up until very recently. They are quite literally children to this whole online experience, and are extremely vulnerable to scams like this- particularly if they live in a culture (small town america) where the idea of "scams" in general may not be present (snake oil salesmen don't count.) Not to mention it is exactly this demographic sector that is suffering most dramatically from the recession and some of whom are absolutely desperate. Please do not convince yourself that this is not malicious. Taking someones money under false pretenses is simply abstracted robbery. This is fucked up in every sense of the phrase, just because you are used to it does not make it any less so.
