Is there a good resource for researching the amount of bricks and mortar businesses in a particular Area?

Something like U.S. Commercial Service : Your Global Business Partner but with better filters.

Try finding a mailing list broker who does free online counts... then you can find the number of businesses who match the criteria you're after. I use Marketing File http://www.marketingfile.com , but they are EU only. I'm sure there will be a US equivalent.
