Alright so I got a site set up for my town in Michigan ... "mytownmich" dot com. I did a test and was able to rank #2 for the local bowling alley easily. I want to offer local marketing to companies through this site.

My tentative plan, using pizza as an example, is this:

-Rank on the first page for pizza in ____ and then have the meta title be "best pizza in _____"

- Visit a local pizza parlor and tell the owner about my site and to search "pizza in _____" or just tell him that I have a page that will show up on the first page of Google for his business/service.

-Then I offer to feature his site for X amount of money (not sure what a good price would be though)

Do you think this would be a legitimate business plan or am I better off just pursuing the route of building them a website if they don't have one and then promoting on Google Places and Yelp?

Sorry for the verbosity. I am completely new to local SEO marketing so if this plan is retarded let me know.

I assume you already read all the local threads around here? In particular this one: http://www.wickedfire.com/traffic-content/83434-local-business-seo.html ?

The directory route may still work in some niches but is not the way to go if you're looking ahead. Google Places has made it clear that they want to dominate for local. If you still want to go this route, take a good look at the niche ahead of time and make sure that no (or very few) local listings are popping up for the term. Again, This is fairly short-sited as you need to assume that Google will probably be in this niche in the near future.

Ah...yeah I have read that thread before but I was curious because I already had this domain from an impulse buy a while ago.

But no your explanation makes sense and I think I'm going to do more research in G Places.

You can delete this thread if you want, thanks for the advice.

No need. You're in the Newbie section and I'm always ok with discussions about Local. :D Feel free to ask your questions just make sure to read all the great stuff around here about the subject.

Well Idea, you can pull up through local listing and local directories may be classified also social media can help you out, of course blog, article and FB twitter as well.

Not so fast. Google does indeed still pull up other directories in its results. Maybe not as consistently as we would wish but it's not impossible to have a whole directory category get good play in Google -I'm sure a lot better play than most SMBs can get on their own.

Also, you can make the directory angle work if you combine it with other local small business offers like selling domain names and hosting, and even more involved SEO services. You can use the directory as a foot in the door tool to up-sell other products.

Another way to use a local directory would be to limit it to a co-op advertising venue. Maybe only allow 3 premium paying businesses per category and use that funding to promote the directory in various ways.

I think it's a good start. It's actually what I have planned to do with my local marketing but I'm eyeing on Craigslist and other quality classified sites.
