Looking for a Little Guidance to Help Me Sort Through Affiliate Marketing Madness

OK, so this is my first post and of course I have questions. I've read through alot of the stuff here on the forums and have really been doing my homework in terms of researching how this whole affiliate marketing thing works, how to find niches, keywords etc., and it seems that there are really many different ways to go about putting together a site and promoting a product.

So, I'm looking for a bit of advice/constructive criticism on what I have planned out:
Create an opt-in page because I'm not too into blogging and I'd rather just have a nice neat little page for a product or e-book I can promote and gather e-mails for a newsletter
- ok, but here's the problem - I've read that Google doesn't like one page opt-ins however... I see them all over the place. So, I guess the question is, should my optin page be part of a small info site that I build to make it more Google friendly or is it not really necessary?
Someone on here (don't remember who) mentioned that one page opt-ins didn't work as well any more as it used to, but I did a bit of research just clicking some of the author bio links on ezine articles and such and plenty of people are doing it (and the sites are recent from this year) which tells me that it must work, otherwise why waste your time.

I can't afford to make mistakes doing PPC marketing for my page (yet) and learn that way so... ezinearticles and Yahoo Answers it is. I also read about creating a wiki page or hubpage as well with info on them and don't miond the upfront work of putting together info for them.
-but here's the problem with that - I read elsewhere that submitting your own articles with links to your page/site can actually push your rank down even using longtail keywords (I believe I read that on BlueHatSEO) and that you should use other people's articles that are already on there for this purpose, but that would be plagiarism would it not?

And here's the other thing - this all makes enough sense to me but, when you do a newsletter/opt-in do you market only one product? I would think that you would get more content for newsletters and keep people interested longer if you're not always sending them back to the same damn e-book or whatever that you're promoting.

Anyway, just some things I'd like some help getting sorted out I as I get started on this. There's a ton of info on here for people doing affiliate marketing and using ppc, but not as much as I'd like for those who need to start out on a shoestring and don't mind doing some work to get the ball rolling (and yes, I have used the search function on here. extensively)

Constructive advice greatly appreciated
