10 websites should be fine on a VPS and you don't need a separate IP address for each unless you plan on running a SSL cert on each website, they can all share the same IP address.
You really have to gauge it like this... I don't want to sound like a know it all or anythig but I am no idiot when it comes to this stuff as I have been doing this for a long time.
What types of sites are you running?
1) Simple 1-10 page landers/WP sites? If so, go grab an unmanaged VPS and intovps.com and run your sites on it.
2) Sites with database that need some horsepower (no not simple little po' dunk databases) that you need to ensure reliability? Maybe go with a VPS from ServerInt.net as they will help you troubleshoot issues.
Lastly go get yourself a pingdom account and monitor your sites. If you site goes down you are instantly alerted and can hop on the problem.

say if you have 10 websites that make money would you be confident enough to put all 10 in the same vps? obv the server can cope (and you have independant IPs for each).
If not what would be the alternatrive configurastion?
Would you spread them out to limit headaches?
