Louis C.K. made 1mm and gave 500k of it away...

That's a good marketing strategy destined to work well. On a side note, the name of one of the charities Fistula Foundation for battered woman sounds too much like Fist in the Face Foundation. Could do with a name change?

Comedian Louis C.K. made $1M, gave half away - Entertainment - The Arts - TODAY.com

220k downloads of his latest special at $5 each...he included a note on the site asking people not to pirate the show.

oops. I literally just finished watching this 60 seconds ago after finding it on the bay. A few moments in that show I laughed the hardest I've ever laughed in my life. I didn't realize it was self-produced & distributed and have no problem paying for it. The bit when he talks about getting high fucking killed me. My abs are still sore.

His message to Piratebay
To those who might wish to "torrent" this video: look, I don't really get the whole "torrent" thing. I don't know enough about it to judge either way. But I'd just like you to consider this: I made this video extremely easy to use against well-informed advice. I was told that it would be easier to torrent the way I made it, but I chose to do it this way anyway, because I want it to be easy for people to watch and enjoy this video in any way they want without "corporate" restrictions. Please bear in mind that I am not a company or a corporation. I'm just some guy. I paid for the production and posting of this video with my own money. I would like to be able to post more material to the fans in this way, which makes it cheaper for the buyer and more pleasant for me. So, please help me keep this being a good idea. I can't stop you from torrenting; all I can do is politely ask you to pay your five little dollars, enjoy the video, and let other people find it in the same way. Sincerely, Louis C.K. IF U LIKE IT BUY IT OR I WILL DELETE IT THIS IS A TASTE BUY ART TO APPRECIATE IT thx

We all need to support this type of stuff! I to downloaded if from the bay as well but I will be buying the thing, I love what hes doing.

well he needed to pay some tax...so at least part of that was for tax reasons...however kudos on him

The way he handled the pirating of his show was genius!

Even though I grabbed it off PB, I still felt I should throw him the $5 when I was watching it and when I thought about it later.

Now let me be clear ... I didnt give him the $5 but it made me feel good for just thinking of how considerate I am :)

For some reason I am with the mentality that if you can get it for free than why pay for it but it this case I would for sure give him the $5. After all it is totally worth more than that and I am so tired of the middle man making all the money.

Just bought it, downloading now. I would never usually think of reaching for the credit card for shows I can download but decided to do it for a few reasons.

- Love Louie's humor, and don't mind supporting him directly
- Love the idea of this whole way of marketing things and would rather see the $$ go to Louie, his staff, and some charities than to CEO's and other overpaid executives.
- They made payment simple and quick - didn't need to make an account or anything.
- It's only $5

Louie is the best. I saw his show in Boston this fall and he called me a "fucking misanthrope" because I clapped when he said "I don't really like people". Having Louis C.K. call me a misanthrope in public was one of the highlights of my year.

The development of the website, which needed to be a very robust, reliable and carefully constructed website, was around $32,000. We worked for a number of weeks poring over the site to make sure every detail would give buyers a simple, optimal and humane experience for buying the video. I edited the video around the clock for the weeks between the show and the launch.

32 grand for that site? Which one of you motherfuckers...

So did you go back after the fact and pay for it?

Bought it too & I NEVER buy or rent movies anymore. Louis is the man and I want him to bank for this genius move.
