I've always used PC's and I've noticed that almost every programming video I watch is done on a mac and they are using textmate.

I'm jealous and want textmate :)

Thinking about just picking up a macmini and a converter for one of my existing monitors. Don't really feel like 'relearning' to use a mac, I just want to play with textmate :)

Waste of 599? or do you think it's got enough juice. Probably just be using it for development so I would have a ruby stack, python stack, and a php stack.
 


I say buy it! Even if its only for a local dev-platform. Textmate kicks several kind of ass.

And even if it doesn't work out for you, you could plug it into your tv for a great mediacenter.
 
Ha - that is a good idea :) I think I'm going to wait till after xmas though - the freakin mac store was nuts when we walked by it the other day.

Oh, and if you do end up making it a media-center. Steer well clear of Lacie Ethernet drives. They are utter rubbish.
 
Yes, wait until after christmas with ANY electronics shopping.

1. Go to a price comparison site that allows for price charts.
2. See what happens around Christmas (nov-Jan)
3. Decide to shop for gadgets start of february.

Even amazon did a price increase. They fucking dropped a 300% increase on a cheapo digital camera we wanted to get for some relatives' kids. (40 Euros to 160 Euros and I am not kidding)

Giving Textmate a try - damn, it's pretty nice! Goofy thing is that I wouldnt hesitate to spend $60 on a stupid flashlight that I'll never use, but have a hard time spending $60 on something I'll use for hours/day. Stupid, I know - lol. Anyway, I'll agree that Textmate is kick ass.

Why don't you just use Notepad++ (open source) or eclipse, which works on all platforms (I use both with some pico thrown in)

There is also textpad and slickedit, you have to pay for those though.
 
Hey, I've got a Mac Mini sitting around doing nothing (we have so many fucking computers in this house it is ridiculous.) I was considering converting it to a media server to get rid of my POS Toshiba. The Mac is in pretty much out-of-the-box condition (never been used for anything but iTunes and iPod interfacing -- hard drive is basically empty.) I have a monitor adapter, keyboard, wireless mouse and some other stuff on it too. PM me if you're interested and I'll see what my wife wants for it (it's "hers" ie. she bought it with my money.)

LOL. My wife has all kinds of "hers" stuff, and we have some very nice "our" stuff too. I have like four pieces of "my" stuff and I guarantee you I know which category would be first to the pawn shop if the chips were down.

yeah i have the same feeling! let me guess your learning Ruby on Rails

these sleek web development platforms always have mac computers....

mac have a unix kernel so naturally they are sexier.
 
its funny how it goes though....

when you are on a Mac you desire a pc/linux look (ie green text black background matrix style)


and when your on a pc you desire the smoother looking graphics and more sensible colours of a mac computer.

cause one things for sure

who ever did the GUI for windows has never seen a color wheel in their life
