Matt Cutts' view on guest blogging

He should starting following his own advice about quality content on the internet.

Can I have that 3 minutes back...?

He gives the answer in terms of how he views it personally, versus how the algorithm views it.

And thus, the video is a waste of time. As usual.

"I hope that clarifies it a little bit"

"We know that it's indefensible without resorting to manual reviews and we'd like to discourage people from abusing this because there really isn't any way we can correct for it from an algorithmic standpoint."

My thoughts exactly. So Cutts is telling me that Google has a list of these "high-quality" people and a list of "experts" on every topic under the sun. Give me a fucking break. What a douche.

FWIW, when I guest post I don't give two shits about SEO. I guest post in relevant places that have a loyal following, at least that's what the goal is. I want direct traffic and direct access to a group of people that have shown an interest in the topics I cover. My only goal with guest posts is to have the opportunity to engage with a highly targeted audience. If I get any SEO benefit while doing that, great. If I don't, oh well that's not why I was doing it in the first place.

I take the same approach when I accept guest posts. Yes, I want my site to rank in Google just like everyone else, but I'm more concerned with keeping my readers and community happy. If Google doesn't like that and decides to bury me in the SERPs because I didn't use one of their so-called "high-quality" people, they can eat a bag of dicks, I'll get traffic elsewhere.

That being said, I realize that this approach to posting and accepting guest blogs isn't as beneficial or relevant if the only reason for your site is running a one-off offer.

It took Jay Rockefeller and his committee a year to find out that some sites use paid and spam links.

For example, one company had tens of thousands of external links to its website and, upon closer review, these links proved to be largely irrelevant. They included abandoned blogs, link directories for unrelated topics, and college student groups and organizations, such as the Cornell Gymnastics Club.

Matt Cutts is probably worth more than anybody in this thread will ever make thanks to his share options.

He never needs to work again.

And yet he continues to make these videos.

My theory? He just enjoys annoying us.

Maybe Google analyzes everyone's Klout Score <-- sarcasm

Wouldn't be surprised though if Klout used this for publicity. they are shameless at promoting their useless metric.

I was expecting him to say something really ridiculous from the reactions in this thread. Nope, he said the same standard angle, don't outsource shitty guest posts to India/spin posts. Were you guys really expecting him to say "I heard you can get 50 ALN posts on fiverr, you should get that, it'll be awesome!"? And he said it's fine to outsource guest posts, just do it to someone who was educated past age 5.
