So one of my current projects is an "area guide" for a city in the US. Great, fine, dandy. It's actually taking me awhile to put together all the custom written content, inter-linking and all that crap.

Searching for ideas on custom content i run across WeGoPlaces.com - Vacation and travel planning made easy! - they, in a sense, have a guide for places all over the U.S. While the page looks crappy, they know what they are doing... pictures next to adsense, etc..

On top of this, it's obvious they're not writing custom content for every city in the U.S. Either they are scraping info and have a system to automate everything, or, I don't know perhaps they're paying people to write crap.

Either way, I'm now looking at my 1 city guide in progress, looking at their bohemoth all-city guide and thinking - "what the fuck? those mother fuckers. if only i had the resources to pull that off."

Anyone else ever feel the same? Anyone have any experience with making loacation specific websites?

I don't think they're scraping. They're an affiliate of lodging.com (which redirect to orbitz, but I found an affiliate page at Affiliate Program. It looks like that aff program has xml feeds and remote db queries, so for the hotel stuff anyway, they're just pulling data off lodging.com as needed. Same for the air travel booking, another affiliate program. For the events and local attractions, it looks like they just let anyone sign up and add stuff free. A clever site for sure, but man does the design ever suck ass.

they were indexed very high on several search terms for the location (and other locations) i searched for. must be doing some great url rewriting/seo implemention if it's all rss and duplicate content.
