I'm about to have my first website online, and really hope to learn this shit.

In your experiences with working online, what mistakes have you made, big or small, and what would you have done differently?

Thanks! :D

- letting domains sit around unused
- not following through with ideas

I'm still to new to it all. All the "mistakes" I make are more just trial and error (which is probably what alot of people would say) but I don't look at anything as a mistake.

However, I'm sure that the people out there that have been doing this for years and years have a few things they would go back and change if they could. I've heard (read) some people say "don't go into business with friends or family" "don't fuck up your adsense accounts with shady crap, unless you really know what your doing, otherwise you could be banned for life"...

Wasting time looking at p0rn and not putting that energy into making sites.

Video Games especially Starcraft multiplayer. Yes I have been doing this that long. I used to get in epic 3 hour fights where everyone is scrambling for minerals....

In a similar vein to others, my biggest regret is I waited so long to take it seriously. I would have been making bank 10 years ago if I only knew I could.

Being to afraid to put the initial investment into a campaign.

I've been online for over 10 years and it's impossible to count all the mistakes I have made. Because the internet is still relatively new to all of us I don't feel stupid about the things that went wrong. Overall, I've done mostly smart things that worked and I'd rather focus on that :)

This reminds me of a story my dad likes to tell: One morning, a long long time ago (back in the mid 1970's) my dad was reading the paper and he put it down and said to my mom, "There is this company called Apple that's says their goal is to put a personal computer in everyone's household. It sounds interesting, I wonder if we should invest in it?" and Mom said, "Computers? Don't they fill up about 3 rooms in size?"

They just laughed and continued reading the paper and sipping their coffee.
