Here's my dilemma..

I've been a customer for Nextel for 7 years already, never had a problem with them and absolutely love their awesome service. Recently though, I upgraded to one of their unlimited plans because my phone bill was hitting $1k a month, so I figured getting into the unlimited everything plan for $150-$200 a month would be a lot better for me. With the plan came free nights and weekends, free long distance at anytime, and all sorts of other free crap.

My dilemma came from the fact that the douchebag sales person didn't tell me that free long distance only included FREE to OTHER nextel users. No one I know except for me and some friends locally have Nextel, so when I would make all of my long distance calls to Brandon, located in California, I was under the impression they were free. I didn't find out until after a $1500 bill came my way, on top of the unlimited plan.

So what I want to do is switch to Verizon now (even though I don't really like their service), get some type of pda style phone and switch my old number to the new phone.

But at the same time, I was thinking about just adding on Verizon, and keeping my Nextel as my personal phone, and using the new Verizon number as my business phone.

So if any of you have any ideas or advice for me on this dilemma I'd really love to hear it. Do I get rid of Nextel and switch over to Verizon so I can have all of my long distance calls and things I need unlimited for under one bill, or do I keep 2 different carriers? Either way, I'm going to get a new number, but if I change to one carrier, how do I bring my new number to it? Do I have to cancel with Nextel first, or do I get a Verizon plan first? How does this work?

Whatever you do, do NOT get a PocketPC (windows mobile) XDA.
Stick with palm, they know what they're doing.

$1k/month for a phone bill!
thats insanity.
I pay $70/month through US Cellular.
two phones
free nights and weekends
free nationwide long distance
no roaming in the 10 western states
free incoming calls
1,000 anytime minutes (i only use about 200 cus most my calls are incoming or nights and weekends).
Unlimited text (i never text though)

Yeah really man i thought most services had free LD now. Im on T-Mobile i get free long distance anytime, 1000 minutes for like 50 bucks. Cingular is good too. I know a lot of people that have problems with Verizon. There is no way you should have been paying 1k a month thats ridiculous.

I would switch to Cingular or Verizon if i was you, service is better and plans are reasonable. I have two Nextel phones and it took 6 months of changing the plans around to finally stop the overage charges.

I have had Verizon for 8 years or so and they really have the best service for me. i dont have a home phone and verizon is the only cell company that was able to get a tower up in my town otherwise i would have switched to Cingular.

Do not get the windows palm it sucks balls, get a blackberry or the palm OS phone.

Do they have unlimited plans?

Do I cancel Nextel first and then switch, how does the keeping your phone number thing work out?

Hey Jon if you need free.... I mean bonus ringtones for your new phone let me know.

I've had t-mobile for a while now and they have been pretty good for me, I think they have some decent high minute plans. At work we use nextel and it sucks balls. I had verizon for a while and didn't like them, but it was because their service area sucked out here.

Do not cancel the Nextel first. Get your Verizon phone and then call their (Verizon) port center. They will walk you through the process. It's basically verifying account/billing info that you have with Nextel and then they (Verizon) port the Nextel number over. Takes 1-4 hours. But do not cancel the Nextel until this is complete.

I've done this process (Cingular -> Verizon) about 20-30 times now. It's kind of a crap shoot, sometimes it's done in a hour and sometimes you're still bugging them days later becaue they've fucked it up. Nice as can be those Verizon port center folks though. It's tough to yell at them, I've tried.

It's called "porting" when you want to keep your old number and move it to a new carrier. Do NOT cancel your existing service before you do this. You'll need to contact the new carrier first, who will start the porting process. They will then start a porting request of the old carrier. I think it took less than 2-hrs total to port my new carrier (went from T-Mobile to Cingular).

Shit, I thought I was about to learn how to spam mobile phones! not give advice on what carrier to use.
I use T-mobile and have had no issues with them.
They have a 5k minute plan I think

Alright, I'm trying to decide between Verizon and Cingular now..

Both have the 6k minute plan with the free this and that, but 6k should cover me since they don't have the awesome nextel option of free incoming.

Which phone do I choose now?

Motorola Q with Verizon
or
Palm Treo 680 Cingular

I also forgot to add Cingular also has a great selection of PDA's (Blackberry series, Samsung BlackJack, BlackBerry Pearl, Cingular 8125, Palm Treo, etc) and they also have a 6000 min plan for $199 a month.

What made me eventually switch from T-Mobile to Cingular was Cingular's "rollover minutes" offer. T-mobile's service was great but being able to carry over your unused minutes to the next month is a huge bonus. I've been with them for over 2-yrs now and have saved up a lot of talk time with it.

I've had both a Treo and Q. Been using the Q exclusively since it came out and love it. But I don't talk on the phone that much. 1 hour a day max. Like most of these devices it more pda than it is phone.

The Treo is more functional and runs a lot more 3rd party apps but it's big, bulkly and heavy. If you're the kind of dork who likes to wear these things on your tool belt that shouldn't be a problem. But if you actually get laid once in a while and put phones in your pocket where they belong then you'll want to get the Q.

What is a Q?

Hey, most of us get laid BECAUSE of the big, bulky things in our pockets...

Is that a joke?

WM rocks palmOS in every single way.

I'd switch to Cingular Jon - you'd be quite happy with the Cingular 8525. It has Windows Mobile 5.0 and everything good. Not to mention it has 3G support as well.

Get the Q, it's badass. I've been using it for a few months now and love it, best reception I've gotten on a phone. I don't know if you remember but that WF Theme I showed you on aim awhile back was for the Q...I should finish that.
