For you forum admins out there - have you ever had a moderator you trusted who turned out to be building their own copy of your community and privately inviting members to join it? AND getting your other moderators to mod over there?

I have not banned the mod (i don't want her to show up as banned since she has so many posts) but I have moved her to the Guest/Not Logged In usergroup. ;)

What a piece of fucking shit. I should just get men to moderate even though it's a women's forum.

Yeah, there have been several copycat boards that have popped up over the years started by members. A couple are still around, I think.

Take it as a compliment. :) You are worth copying! Okay, I know that's not helpful. The most I can say is: Yes, it happens, and this probably won't be the last time. When you have an open environment like a message board - a space that also requires more than a few hands in the pot to keep things running smoothly - things like this are bound to happen when you have a good thing going.

Most people have no clue how hard it is to start and run a forum, so chances are that will kill them right there.

But more importantly, if your mods are ditching you to mod at another site just because they are asked, make sure to tell them not to let the door hit them on the way out. Be glad they are gone now if they are that disloyal to you.

It sucks that this has happened. :( Hopefully it passes quickly for you.

Very true.

Hmmmm do you think it's better to hire moderators instead of using catty volunteers?

I don't think so. It will take away their motivation. Even if they loved your forum before, they will all of a sudden look at visiting it as a job. Whereas, if it remains their hobby they will find time to visit your forum and moderate.

Shower them with special recognition. Silly "special" avatars and lots of trinkets hanging off their posts like .jpgs reminiscent of military medals work very well. It makes them feel like they're the big kids on the block. After a while, they basically handle everything.

At least that's how it was on the forum I used to run. But now that I've gotten away from it, I don't think I'll ever want that headache again.

Yeah, I really don't want to run this site anymore. I'm tired of insecure women causing drama for fun. Insecure overweight women = my target audience unfortunately.

I am starting a bunch of new projects. Maybe I should sell the site as income is pretty good. What would you do?

Oh, have you visited my new forum, FireWicked.com?

Just kidding; I have had this happen before. Really didn't care because the guy was pissing a lot of people off and I was about to ban him anyways.

Yeah, this stuff happens. At first you feel anger about losing members, but in the end it actually turns out to be good. I am sending all the trolls and idiots over there. ;) It's also a lot of fun to register with the other forums and play some "games". Become a "trusted" member first and then slowly pull off a really crazy story that gets more and more crazy over time.

Too many headaches with a forum sometimes. I've had my wife's forum copied 6 times, sometimes including a lot of posts. But I just watch them and enjoy the sideshow of seeing it fail.

I will never-ever-ever build another forum ever again. EVER. They are the worst for monetizing in tiny niche markets because the people that see your ads are the same people visiting daily....

Sometimes, free content, SUCKS.

Alternatively, disallow the bots and feed the posts to a blog, then monetize the blog.

Not a forum but on my one social networking site I logged on last night to find a topic on the forum from a regular member advertising his new social network and telling everyone to join. He was like "Come join *his site* the hottest new social network site in Canada. Hopefully one day we can partner with *my site*. I was a bit pissed but just deleted the post, then found out he spammed tons of the comment boards on the site with the same shit so I deleted them all then found him trying to get people to leave my site in PM's and shit.

He even tried to get one of the stakeholders to leave and join his site with it's 30 odd members. Well by this point I was fuming, so I sent his company a mail saying basically to knock it off and if I see it again I'll consider legal actions.

This morning I find out he flipped out and started screaming at the other owner about how he invited people our site so should be allowed to promote his own and that we were assholes and he hated us and why were we suing him and blah blah blah.

It is then that I realized the old saying is true. Never attribute to malice that which can easily be explained by stupidity. He honestly didn't think what he was doing was wrong, and thought we'd be happy and partner with him(a site with 30 members) and do cross advertising and the best way to start this partnership was spamming our site. He also missed the part where I said "If this continues" before the legal shit and was convinced we were suing him.

Retard, but I will watch his site with interest.

/end rant
