Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo Has Crashed, One Pilot Confirmed Dead

Virgin Galactic is reporting that there has been an "in-flight anomaly" aboard SpaceShipTwo. There were unconfirmed reports that one of the two pilots is dead. Those reports have now been confirmed. The suborbital flight took off at 9:19am PDT from the Mojave Air and Spaceport in California. Update: Virgin Galactic has confirmed that SpaceshipTwo has crashed and the California Highway Patrol has confirmed that there is one fatality and one major injury.

Elon Musk will offer every bit of support he can. I don't mean like "we're with you bro'.. " type support, but actual "let's join our efforts and make this actually fucking happen" support. (that might be stretching it somewhat though.)

I know the two don't have even slightly the same goals but they both seem to be people who are prepared to stick their money where their mouth is and get shit done.

Virgin Galactic can't make a spaceship - meanwhile Nasa goes to the moon and back 50yrs ago. Elon Musk can't run a biz w/out getting special treatment and favors from the government.

Now you understand the full powa of the STATE and the failure of Free Market Crapitalism! All worthwhile innovation is brought about by forced taxation of the peasants so the wealth can be controlled by those worthy of it. Smaller power structures, like corporations, will never compete with the awesome power and glory of the STATE.

What's the legal status of the Moon and later Mars? If Elon Musk makes it first to the Moon and puts up some Moonbase, does he own the Moon? How much land does he own?

What about Mars? A couple hundred Martians declare independence, does Barack Obama Junior III nuke them from orbit?

A great case study for libertarians and their utopian ideas of property.

I would guess you can claim it is yours, but if you cant fight for it, then who ever is there owns it.

Technically no one owns it. I think all the governmental bodies declared space as "everyones." Of course that was way back in the day when only the USA and USSR could even make it into space, so I think it was just a nice gesture. This was before we even realized there were resources we could mine out of space. Before private citizens/corporations could make it into space.

The reality is if Virgin makes it to the moon, sets up a permanent moon base then they own that bitch. The only way to "take" it would be to siege said moon base and conquer it. Fortunately we're all to busy killing each other for resources down here so it won't happen for another 50-100 years.

Our grand children are going to live the "Star Wars" movies IRL though once Helium 3 becomes the next fuel source and everyone is trying to mine the moon, asteroids, etc...

No worries. How many airplanes crashed before we had it 100% figured out? Oh wait, we still don't... we fly on those no problem though, so give space travel some time, and I'm certain the same will happen.
