Usually when I build a landing page I can pull some pretty decent QS and bid prices. Perhaps I've been l I built a new landing page for some email/zip submits, but cannot get cheap clicks because my QS is poor for almost all keywords. I was trying to bank from the new 50 cent and Kanye West albums. Here's the page I built:

Will 50 Cent out sell Kanye West? You decide.

For terms like "50 cent" or "Kanye West" google wants me to pay $.50 and ranks me poor. I haven't checked recently but when I made this noone else was bidding on these terms.

I used an ad copy like this:

50 Cent or Kanye West
Who will sell more albums?
Vote now for a free Visa gift card.

I even let the clicks role for a few days to get the CTR up, see if maybe the QS would go up.. nothing.

One thing to note, I did make some changes since it was rated poor so I'm sure it's better than it was, but still, why does Google hate me?

Any insite? I'm sure there is money to be made here..

You need a better LP, bro. :)

Also, have you tried bidding on keywords like "50 cent album", "50 cent new album", "Kanye west album", "Kanye west new album". Try more longtail keywords. Should lower bids.

Thanks for the tip. I have some long tail keywords I could pull $.10 bids for but it didn't convert that well really. I'm more worried about learning how to get cheap clicks then I'll work on the conversion factor. Any thing you could recommend for a better landing page or a good example of a CPA landing page?

You'll hear arguments both ways as to whether these tips work or not. I'll let you figure it out for yourself.

  • Use a PHP redirect to cloak your affiliate links.
  • Keep your adgroups relatively tight. Keep the adtext relevant to the keywords. One trick that I use is to stick an article frome ezine or somewhere that's relevant to my keywords waay down the page, below the fold.
  • Bid high, get in positions 1-3, and use an ad that'll get you a high CTR for awhile, even if it means sacrificing conversions. The high QS you'll get because of it is worth the money.
I gotta run right now, there are plenty of more tips that can help, I honestly get pissed off at quality score nearly everyday of my life.

Scott, has your financial situation gotten any better since quitting your job at the piano store?

Loving it. No regrets at all. I've finally reached the point where I'm exceeding my old income, and it gets better everyday.

Thanks for asking.

Ill give you some tips to improve QS, if you dont mind please post if these have helped or not, as well as anyone else who uses them please give back your experiences.

First google is concerned that youre not just a landing page redirecting people to an affiliate offer but its OK to have affiliate links, you just need a good portion of content in relation to links. So what has worked for some is to build a good strong content page with links out to sub pages like about, contact, privacy, etc like a real site would have (but relevant to your ads, so you might have a music site with lots of keywords about kanye west, and 50cent). you list this site on your root directory and put your monkey page as like www.site.com/50centkanyepoll/index.asp and direct all the PPC listings to your monkey page. Google will see the main site and think your site is relevant to what youre bidding on and your link is a deep link in to the relevant portion of your site :). If youre going to do a lot of polls, make one site thats a poll site, on the home page put todays polls but link all your ads to the specific poll, as you add more polls google should rank them as good based on the other listings listed with that site

Some solid information, thank you.

Quick update on this problem, I haven't changed anything on the site except I wrote a php redirect script and masked my affiliate links. I let the ad group role for a day or two with some higher CPC but low daily budget, about 4% CTR, and my min bids went down from $.30 and $.40 to $.10 or so and my QS went from poor to ok for the most part. So far so good, I don't work on it much but as I do I'll keep this thread updated. My advice to anyone having a similar problem with QS:

1. Mask your affiliate links. If you want my script let me know, it's easy.
2. Let your ad group run with some higher bids so the CTR is decent, just set a daily budget if you're cheap.
3. Put a privacy policy and contact page on your site so it's not just a landing page but a landing site.

Good tips here...anyone else have any?

How long does it usually take for Google to update your QS after you make changes? It's too bad this is in the newbie section where no one will bother to look at it.

Also looking for info on how long it takes, sounds like a day or 2 from reading.. but please share.

Also, where in Adwords do you see the actual QS score?

When you're looking at your keywords list in AdWords, look for the customize columns link, click that, add quality score column.

I honestly see minimum bid prices change in under 24hours sometimes.

Just a quick point, you say in your advert " Vote now for a free Visa gift card." yet on your site it says click to see if you qualify for free concert tickets ?

It may be affecting your conversions if people are expecting to get a Visa gift card

I actually changed the offer and the ad, I just didn't update the post. Believe it or not, that domain gets maybe 5 type ins a day, didn't expect that. Anyway I moved on, if I ever come back to this page I'll keep you posted.
