Need a new VPS provider

I've been with KnownHost for almost a year and a half. While I was originally elated with the level of customer service and relative value of the pricing, the actual quality of the hosting is just shit. Anything running on WP or other database-heavy application runs extremely slow, often causing me to have to add additional steps to site updates and other tasks which could be handled via the WP interface if the site wouldn't time out. I change file permmissions, and they change back (wtf? is that even technologically possible, or are they reviewing customers' setups and changing them in the name of "security?") And then, in the final cherry on the shit sundae, the customer service that I so loved when I first signed up took a huge nosedive when I received multiple automated threats to have my account terminated due to spamming, when I don't fucking spam, I don't even mail off of any domain associated with that account (and the only mailing I do is opt-in stuff anyway, so certainly not spam) and my repeated attempts to chart out for them what was going on, how they were getting these incorrect reports, led to them talking down their noses at me and assuring me that I should be grateful (actual term used: grateful) that they were looking out for me (by threatening me with account closure if I did not take time out of my day to check their bullshit report and provide them with affirmative feedback.)

Slow sites are aggravating but livable. However, I'd rather be mugged and punched in the dick for good measure, than deal with clueless and arrogant.customer service reps in any capacity.

So ... anybody have a VPS reco?

It seems everything is going to shit these days... I've experienced the same with KH before until I got on the horn and lit them up over at WHT. THEN a manager contacted me and got my shit straight. Though it starting to slip again. I recently grabbed another vs2 or 3 and it's slow as fucking balls -- with 4 wp sites on it and zero traffic. Of course support loves to bend you over with any "slow reports."

Liquidweb is doing the same shit this week... tried out one of their smart vps accounts... fucking thing hasn't worked for shit since it's been provisioned. (4 days ago) Last ticket response was 5 hours ago and all my sites are still down.

Heroic? Me thinks not.

So yeah, I'm in the market today too. I'm tempted to give WiredTree a try again because they had fast support last year, but I dumped them because there was WAY to much downtime.


I've heard you can't go wrong with Slicehost or Linode, but I know nothing about setting that shit up or running vanilla.
 
I had VPS for a while and the company I went with was called unixy. They rocked with customer support, no downtime or lag what so ever. I created a ticket at 6am on a saturday and they answered within 15 mins no joke.
 
I've been with quite a few providers over the years and always end up back with Future Hosting. They're priced so, so well (fully managed is only 2 or 3 bucks more per month in most cases!) and I have no downtime beyond that that might be expected. Ticket response is 5-10 mins by the way.

I've used KnownHost a couple of months before going Dedicated and had no problems whatsoever.
I guess it's a roll of the dice to see if you're put on a good speced server that don't have other clients hogging down on resources.

Have used them before as well, do recommend.
 
I can suggest to go for hostome.com ; You can get excellent VPS service over there at most affordable price!
 
I just went with hostdime (their unmanaged site though - since i prefer doing things myself). They have a nice deal going thru webhostingtalk. I would suggest just going over there to the vps forum (or offers forum) and post what you're looking for. I got a nice deal from posting over there.

I'd stay clear of anything DimeNoc related. They were our original datacenter when we first launched and they have a nice building, but fuck are they stupid.
 
Seconded. I was looking for someone close (dimenoc's main facility is 15 minutes from me) and went through a reseller.... sucked.
 
To add to my previous post, I have a mini project and tried Wired Tree.
They are pretty good alternative (they had some problems last year but are awesome again now)
