Need some site building advice

My business partners and I are in the process of putting up a new site in a niche. This is not an affiliate niche - it's more of a community building/long term type niche.

I had planned on building the core of the site around Wordpress for ease of use but I have some special requirements that I can not find in the WP plugins I have found so far.

I need the site to allow the users to do the following for example:

1.) Upload files (documents)
2.) Specify which documents are "public" and which are private
3.) Have a user profile with public and private elements, and
4.) Allow users to contact other users to request access to their private documents.

If anyone is familiar with a WP plugin that does anything like that let me know. Paid plugins are fine - so are plugins that do part/all of that because I can hack it together from there if I need to.

I'm also willing to entertain custom coding offers - but the requirements above have to be fulfilled one way or another.

That will do about 90% of it - might need a coder to add an extension.

are you somehow bound to wordpress?
I think wider scope cmss like drupal or joomla ( I personally hate this one ) might have what you need.

I've read many times that WP sucks for user permission based sites like the one you're going to build.

Wordpress is probably bad choice for what you want. Joomla with one of the document sharing modules is probably what you want, or nukedotnet.
