Hi All,

I have recently had some pretty horrific experiences with my hosting set up etc.

I have a shared 1and1 account which seemed like a good idea at the time. Anyway, twice in the last month i have picked up some kind of virus on my PC and its gone straight in to my FTP and fucked my shit up!

This has wasted a day or more each time plus the stress when the phone starts ringing etc.

I KNOW i need to ditch one and one but . .. WTH can i do to stop this happening again?

So far i plan to buy a VPS that allows for individual web spaces to avoid the problem of all ur stuff in one place like 1and1.

Then . . IDK.. do i need to start using Linux, god forbid, an apple machine?

My resources consist of 2-3 decent desktop PC's in my office and maybe 100$ a month or so to spend.

I have a 100GB online storage account that is already in use.

:/

Halp!

First thing you need to do is get a Mac, seriously. Then sign up to Hostgator.
No more worries.

get rid of windows based hosting.

separate machines for play and work.
linux / bsd should be in the equation.

OK thanks. Is linux as good as mac in terms of being resilient against viruses etc?

idk im not exactly flush with cash.

Any more general things i can do anybody?

Thanks!

:)

dude that mac advise is like the dumbest advise ever in case of security and being unprotected.. Mac has less viruses but growing SUPER fast as security there is worse then Windows and they are not open about it at all..

go with linux.. yes viruses also exists for linux however basically it is all your fault (sorry) you should better invest in your own education (or hire somebody) about security to not get viruses (where getting some good anti virus protection is 1 step but just a SMALL step). 99% of all virus infection is because of user stupidity!

Getting a Linux based VPS with basic resources and installing a software firewall is what I would like to recommend you. And IMO hardware has very less things to do with virus infection so don't take it so seriously.
