No. Korea is a blackmail-ocracy, using the nukes and the women as bargaining chips to get what they want. Diplomacy is going to get them freed, like what happened in Iran last month when an Iranian-American journalist was freed.
I was reading an article on this story, and it seems they were working in China, close to the border, and were taken to No. Korea to be accused as "spies."
It's normal business of the day in No. Korea to actually kidnap people over neighboring borders to use them as hostages at the bargaining table. There was a big story on 60 Minutes on Japanese children kidnapped and sent to No. Korea in the 70s and 80s. They were just scooped off the street while going to school or something, and it was so tragic what was done to them and their families.

Yeah, that's a big issue here in Japan. They were kidnapped and made to teach Japanese to North Korean agents from what I know. But now they're just pawns in negotiations. And N.Korea keeps saying that they're dead, then magically producing a few of them to bait Japan in negotiations. Pretty fucking annoying. It's like "Umm, actually you kidnapped those people and you have no right to ask for anything in exchange for their return". Pure blackmail.
Kim Jong-il's a nutcase, but when he's dead hopefully things will change.

Most die of overwork and lack of nutrition far before 12 years. Horrible decision- I really suspect they were grabbed while easily on the chinese side of the border but doing one of those "only 50 feet this direction on this frozen lake is N. Korea- a land shrouded in .... <snatched>"

From my understanding , north korea labor camps are similar to Soviet Gulags.
Imagine working 16 hours a day with only a cup of tea and a small bowl of soup each day....900 calories max.
If they're not being passed around as sex slaves (Which i think is quite possible) They will last a few months in the labor camps , year tops.

Killing/kidnapping people, brainwashing , selling nuclear and conventional weapons to terrorist orginizations ,ect are all things that they do.
They use this stuff as blackmail to get what they want, and for the longest time everyone has just given into them.
