So, I was hoping this oil spill thing would just go away, but it looks like it is going to be a reality for us along the Gulf Coast.

Yup, I live on the gulf coast and the oil is going to start hitting our beautiful white sandy beaches on Sunday. The bad thign is, there is no end in sight. The freakin rig is still leaking!

Living in an area where tourism is the main industry, things are already going downhill. Everyone is canceling their condo reservations all the way out through July. The restaurants, clubs, realestate, souvenier shops- they are all going to be hit hard.

Then there is the environment. I am no environmentalist, in fact I still believe in offshore drilling and believe we ned to do more of it - even off the coast of my beaches. But, we have tons of Dolphins. birds and shrimp and crabs that are going to start dying.

Sucks all around. I just cant get over the fact that the rig is still leaking, and there are no immediate plans of stopping it.

Should you care? Probably not, I just wanted to vent a little. I kayak fish oout in the Gulf for King, Spanish and Tuna. Now, I am beached for the time being. And, this could have a 5-10 year impact on the area.

This sucks and is not even a joke, this is going to fuck up everything for our country and cause oil prices to rise extremely high. They will scrap any offshore drilling now.

Read they were burning the oil (trying to at least). That might help a little bit but sounds like you all are sort of fucked.

Shame too - I was looking forward to visit there this summer. I've never been to the gulf and it was on our summer list of shit to do.

Its already hitting the land down by Empire. Its leaking 200,000 gallons of oil per day, and the only surefire way to stop the leak is re-drilling, which will take 3 months to complete.

They tried, but it hasnt been all that effective. The latest word is that the rig is now leaking 210,000 gallons a day, and at the absolute earliest - It will take 90 days for BP to stop the leak. 3 mmonths of 210,000 gallons of leaking oil a day? The entire way of life for the gulf coast is at stake. Including mine.

75% of the shrimp caught in the US comse fro mthe gulf. This year, shrimping could be shut off period.

Obama will try to ban offshore drilling now.

Actually, he's probably got a lot of funding from oil tycoons, never mind. This sure does make the Alberta oil sands look good though.

BP setup a hotline and has already had hundreds of callers wanting to volunteer their boats to help, and hardly any have been utilized. I read earlier that new limits of 1 redfish/5 speckled trout are about to be considered, all of the guides will be out of business. Its going to be just as bad for anyone involved in shrimp and shellfish too. Would BP subsidizing people's income be too bad of an idea?

wut.

edit: course, if you're anywhere outside of the Galveston are this might make more sense, but "beautiful" is still pushing it.
