Hi all,

Im unsure how to deal with this problem from mainly a SEO point of view.
On my site, each product have its own page with info and my affiliate link.
What do i do when the product is no longer available for sale. I cant take the page down because that will cause a 404 and doing a 301 might be time consuming depending on the number of products
I see a few option but unsure which one is better.

1. Leave the all product info there with notice saying that product in no longer available and remove affiliate link.
2. Remove all product info with notice saying product no longer available and offer alteratives.

Not sure which of the two to implement. or maybe a combination of both?

Just wondering how you guys do it?

thanks in advance.

I'd go with number 2. No reason to yank down an aged URL, IMO it's very worthwhile to take a moment and find some alternatives.

I would leave the page up, put up a big out of stock notice and then offer your consumer close alternatives.

Leave the Page intact. It will not hurt your whole site but it will hurt in terms of "NEW" visitors from Search Engines. They will tend to hit the back button if they see a page like 404 or 301 and consider not just the page but the whole site dead. Also if you target a Keyword for that page leave the content Behind cause it will hurt your rankings!

What I can suggest is edit on the Top and the bottom of the page and mark it red saying "product no longer for available"then put below it "Model 29293 is the best alternative" get the idea? use it in your own words. Just don't touch anything else. Making sure that your readers will know first and foremost that the product is not available. It will also give them the specs to compare the old product for the alternative that you have offered.

Hope that helps out :)
