I'm a vbulletin guy. All my forums are vbulletin. But I'm wondering... I have a few sites that are doing so/so but I think adding on a quick forum in a sub-directory could provide some value. But not worth the vB investment.

For those that have either used phpBB and/or the wordpress BB plugin... do you find them adequate? great? horrible? what would you recommend?

My main concerns are usability, security and upgrading I suppose.

I installed phpBB on one website about a year ago and actually forgot about it for a while. When I came back to it after some time, it was totally overwhelmed with spam, so I deleted it alltogether. Maybe (probably) today the phpBB code is more secure, dunno. Just my 2C.

I've had this problem with phpBB on more than one occasion. I had a slightly active forum (maybe 20 or so regular visitors) but I had to delete it because I was getting and having to delete around 20 spam signups/messages per day. Wasn't worth the overhead.

To be fair though I didn't spend a lot of time searching for a solution, so there may be one out there.

PHPBB is good as long as you are going to pay attention to the site. Its easy for a bot to spam the hell out of it.

I had a phpBB forum a while back just to mess around with an AI mod I had installed. I completely forgot about it for like 6 months; when I remembered, I went back to it and found not only a shitload of spam posts, but my AI would sometimes post a reply to them. The spambots usually didn't post more than once per thread, but there was one that kept coming back to the same thread after my AI would reply. I thought it was funny, because after about 10 or 12 posts, the AI stopped replying; its last post was "Hmm... I think I need a new algorithm."

phpBB is good, but you do have to stay on top of it and keep it patched.

I use phpbb3 now for my forum and I get 300 uniques per day to it. I have had it installed since Jan and I have not had a spam bot register and post yet (keeping my fingers crossed). We have taken limited steps other then the stock Capatcha in order to stop spam bots. We also do not require verification in order to register.

I must say that in the past though my preferred method of dealing with spam is a DOS attack on the offending site.
