I ended up getting a bad Macbook Pro 17" that kept giving me what I am guessing is the Mac OSX version of the blue screen of death. It would crash and lock up asking me to restart. They couldn't figure it out at my local Apple store after doing some software troubleshooting and having me install a fresh version of OSX.

I have to admit I was dissapointed with the portability of the 17". I was relieved to find out that they didn't have any 2.33ghz 17" in stock as of yet. So after alot of talking, and what appeared to be some phone calls I was able to bargain my way down to a fully loaded 15" 2.13ghz with 3mb of ram, a 60gig firewire drive, and a bluetooth Mighty Mouse for my 17" Pro since I was within the 14 days. They didn't even charge me the open box fee.

I don't notice any performance difference since I downgraded to the 2.13ghz processor. It's too bad that they didn't have any of the 15" 2.33ghz Pro's...but I'm happy.

After killing 10 PC's in my time, I figured the time to push a Mac to it's limits was at hand.

Free/Opensource software?

Anything available?

wow, I have not had a machine with 3mb of ram since well maybe was it 1989 or 88? I forget! lol, think you meant 3gb!

What kind of software are you looking for?

There are tools for "working" with DVDs, Mactheripper, etc. You can ftp from within mac, when your on the desktop cmd-k, just like connecting to a server. If you chat on aol use Mac ichat, otherwise use fire, works with many ims. Get Azeurus for torrents, jird or jbid I forget for sniping ebay, oneButton ftp if you don't wat to use the built in. Check out the Aplle site for cool dashboard widgets. VLC is good for mpegs. VNC is available for Mac as well.

For commercial stuff look at stuf-it, bbedit is good text/web editor (not wysiwyg), toast for burning. If you do a lot with PC files it sometimes chokes on multi-part RAR files.

The Mac runs utilities in the middle of the night, daily, weekly and monthly I believe. If you don't leave it on 24/7 get mac janitor and run it once a week.

After you install programs it is recomended to run repair permissions (disk utilities), but I don't do it that often.

Avoid norton disk doctor kavorkian. You shouldn't need one of these anyway.

There is free AV software, but I don't use any.

Hope this helps.

If you buy a system that you need software to emulate another system so you can run software that runs natively on another system then there is an issue there.

Yea, Macs blow. I love my PC because I love the freedom of choice. With Mac you can only run OS X, Windows and Linux. With my PC I can run Windows, Linux and.. umm.. BeOS? And I love all my viruses and trojans! Not to mention that I love the fact I need to have firewall and anti-virus software which costs me money every year I need to get new license. I also love the freedom of choice when it comes to the many ways I can crash my computer!

I'm in love with my beige PC.

You're not emulating a pc, windows runs natively on the Mac, you just boot into the OS you want. But yeah, don't infest your Mac with Windoze crap.

Actually with Mac you don't even need to boot to another OS. You can just run whole Windows XP native on OSX in window with Parallels software OR you can run Windows program native in OSX without even running Windows XP with Codeweaver's software.
