So, this applies to a niche I was just researching for a new forum, but I come across this a LOT, too much really. I have two questions:

1) I have niche xxxx - I hit google and search to see if there are forums out there for thsi niche because I got back from an event last night regarding niche xxxx, and I wanted to talk about it!

Googling really finds nothing, or nothing of worth.

I hit GoDaddy and start looking at domain names based around niche xxxx, such as xxxxforum(s), xxxxchat, related_word_to_xxxxforum(s).com, etc.

I encounter the same ol recurring issue, all the good .com domains belong to junk landing pages with the typical keyword/category crap. Although, they mostly take up the .com domains.....

...so, given that info, and the fact that they are landing pages and really aren't ranking on the keywords they should (or that I googled), would you grab the .net alternatives and start development? I normally don't like anything other than .com domains, but given I am finding SO many good topics lately with only .net domains available, and the .com domains being crap/junk sites, I am very tempted to go full boar and succeed with the idea(s) I have using .net and/or alternative keyword domains.

I always worry about doing this because, if I do well and rank well, etc. will the .com benefit from my hard work?

I'd love to hear thoughts/experience on this.

2) After my research, I have about 11 domains that are similar for my targeted niche domain idea, for example:
xxxxforum.com/.net
xxxxchat.net
keywordkeyword.com/.net
relatedwordforum(s).com/.net

  • Would you find it worth registering all the domains you find that could be used for this niche forum, just so noone else grabs it and tries to ride your coat tails?
  • Do you usually grab the .net / .org if it isn't taken, just so others can't?
  • If I select one to develop as my site, would you make pages/mini-sites of the other domains you registered, and link them to my site or would you simply forward them to my site?
I've been wondering about all this for a while so I would love to get some great feedback from you all, thanks!

No, the .com portal site will not benefit from anything you do with your .net site, unless you link to them.

As for .net of .com it really doesn't make a difference. It won't affect your rankings, and for word of mouth, yeah .com is the best but .net is fine too. I would be wary of the more obscure ones like .info and such, but i've used .net before and never have had a problem.

I never use .org unless it is an organization.

As for the multiple domains...if they are different enough in their subject manner, then I would develop different sites for each of them. If they are similiar enough where you would want to put them all on one site, then I would redirect them to subdomains.

sounds like you got a good thing going. i wish i could help ya out man but i really don't have much experience with forums and the ones i have done i just got lucky with. No real skills were involved. Good luck with it though!

The only thing is each domain is that they are so targeted they would be competing with each other for traffic, which wouldn't be too good. I figured if possibly somehow I used them all and submitted to an engine/marketed each differently, that would give me 11 shots at ranking and funneling the traffic somehow to one main site.

I'm afraid I can't offer any advice on forum management either. I can say that tech / internet forums eg(wickedfire, threadwatch, webmasterworld, namepros) has a much bigger audience than offline industries. Whats the industry?

Also, people will more likely respond to your posts if you keep it short.

It's an offline entertainment based industry, but a global one, and it's something that every single person on the planet knows of, and enjoys going to events for (I know, vague, but I don't want anyone to take it until I register the names today...).

And yeah, I started out trying to keep that post short but... :)
