I see tons of proxy sites and networks selling at SitePoint, DP and elsewhere. Almost all of them seem to be monetised exclusively using AdSense. Why don't proxy owners seem to promote paid anonymity services like Metropipe or BlackNet, which seem to be natural fits for the market?

Possibly because there are tons of free proxy sites out there and they feel no need to pay (just like pr0n).

Or because paying is leaving ANOTHER breadcrumb that you are TRYING to prevent being left...

First, the traffic on those sites is fucking terrible. High school kids from China do not have credit cards to make sales. Second the average proxy use is geeky and slightly more intelligent than your average house mom and therefore are ad blind. Third, Metropipe doesn't have an affiliate program. Fourth, Blacknet has an affiliate program, but it only pays 10%, which when you have a maximum subscription price of $59.95 is a pissy $5.95 with a fraud rate of at least 30%, meaning for the 1:150 conversion rate you are likely to receive you are barely making enough to pay for a twinkie.

Thanks for the feedback. I was not necessarily saying "as opposed to" AdSense, but more of a why not do more than just AdSense, with the example that comes to mind being paid privacy services.

I was unaware that MP no longer had an affiliate program -- when they first came out I made a nice little extra bit promoting it.
