So, I'm driving to the Outer Banks (NC) from Philly yesterday, and I get pulled over in Virginia, as well as North Carolina. First guy got me going 70 in a 55, second guy (going opposite direction) got me going 75 in a 55. First pig gave me a ticket, and the second cop let me go (he was much cooler. Realized I had a screaming kid in the car and anyone would speed in my situation).

I think it is time to invest in a radar detector or a Jammer. I spend at least a month in OBX per year, so the investment would be worth it.

Anyone here have any experience/suggestions with this? What is the best device for detecting radar/laser?

From what I have read, detectors only notify you once the cop has already snagged you? Not sure if true.

Nah, they will let you know if there is an officer out there checking speeds with his gun. The alert will typically give you ample amount of time to slow down before an officer can even physically target your vehicle.

There are speed trap apps for your phone as well that can helpful. Whatever you do, conceal that gear - you would have gotten another ticket for the detector in Virginia, not sure about NC.

I remember watching a YouTube video were the guy had a jammer somehow built into his front bumper. You literally can't see it. The officer knew he had a jammer somewhere in the car but couldn't find it. Even after getting the right to search his car. He had to finally let him go.

I remember going on family vacations in the states when I was a kid and my step dad ALWAYS rocked one.

Can't seem to remember one time where he got a ticket but I remember that thing going off tons.

Pretty stupid not to have one in my mind. Just whip it out when you need to blast on the highway and put it in the glovebox when you aren't.

I remember having a radar detector about 20 years ago, didn't realize people still used them. All I remember is that fucking thing used to go off with false positives all the time.

Banks for some reason trigger those pretty often... at least in my experience. Something about there super duper security alarms.

^ also, if the detector is sensitive enough, it will go off when passing any store with automatic doors. One of my old ones had "highway" and "city" modes for just this reason (highway mode being more sensitive).

I have one, but pretty much only use it when going on long road trips - I don't even keep it in my car. Most of my driving is in the city, so I don't get the opportunity to speed even if I wanted too.

I won't get into a debate about V1 vs. Escort, but I will tell you that my experience with the Escort Redline is that it is a bad motherfucker. With the updated firmware, you can turn on band segmentation for the 2/5/8 KA Band, and it's fucking AWESOME. It works incredibly well. Lot of other detectors get a lot of hype, but you want the badboy, get the Redline, and get it directly from Escort along with the extended service plan and the extra sticky suction thing. Escort has a great deal for monthly payments, too. Just fucking look at this bad boy:

Use waze? I always get the "police detected ahead" notice, and you will have ample time to slow down

Radar is a noisy technology that "bleeds" or sends all types of errant signals that can be detected. For example, if radar is shot at a car 1/2 mile away, you may be able to pick up trace amounts of the signal with a detector. Laser detection doesn't work this way. If your laser detector goes off, that means you were hit and they got a reading. A jammer system can cause the gun to return an error, but most cops will know that something is up. Even if they can't get you for an exact speed, they can always get you for too fast for conditions or other violations.

The easiest solution? Either match the speed of traffic, keep it <9 over, or learn how to follow rabbits, let them get pulled over instead of you.

Considering that officers can ticket you for speeding without a radar gun; they can just "accurately estimate" based on perception, that means they will still ticket you for speeding. This is especially the case if they see a misfire on their radar gun and are likely to believe you are running a jammer. They will catch up to you out of spite, and still hit you with a speeding fine.

No they won't, that's a damn lie. Acutally, a pack of lies. Fucking pigs can't give you a ticket without proof goddamnit.

It isn't a lie, tickets have been given out just on the officer visualizing the speed.

Police can give speeding tickets if they 'think' car is going tooGAYfast – Cafferty File - CNN.com Blogs

The state's supreme court ruled five-to-one that independent verification of a driver's speed isn't necessary... things like laser guns or radar or actually clocking how fast you're going. The court says an officer's visual estimate will work as long as the officer is trained, certified by a training academy and experienced in finding speeders.

You can just google "speeding ticket without radar gun" and see how many drivers questioned why they received a speeding ticket even though the officer did not use a radar gun.
