I have a 42" Panasonic Viesa (i think that's what it is) plasma tv in my room. I got totally jewed by my roommate who has the same tv (except 50 in) with a bluray player (that's slightly newer than mine) that uses the exact same remote. He was moving around stuff in his room and had the remotes boxed up so he borrowed my remote cus i never used it before because i didn't have the cable tv ran into the room. Then he got his stuff moved like he wanted and i got the cable ran and i asked for the remote back and he lost mine in the shuffle but claims he gave it back so now he has two of the exact same remotes and only needs one and I have none and have to use the front panel to change channels...grr sorry for the rant

ANYWAYS!
I'm wanting a good universal remote (maybe a harmony or panasonic) that'll control lots and lots of devices and tvs at once. The more teckygeek appealing the better, in other words it needs to be all shiny and lots of buttons and maybe even a tough screen, because I need to make sure its better than anything he can get his hands on, cus otherwise he'll buy the exact same one only slightly better (its his materialistic nature) or if he can't find something better he'll get the exact same one and get like a holder or something for it. I haven't thought about price range although I probably don't want to go too far above $200 since it is just a remote.

Any ideas of what i should get?

If the dude is your roommate why don't you just man the fuck up, swipe his shit (which is really your shit for all you know) and when he gets his panties in a wad tell him he got wasted and lost it and that he should go on WF and post a thread asking for recommendations for a good universal remote.

We have the Harmony 550. Works fine I guess. I don't know all the specs or what not. Hubby geeked out all over the place when we got it. I was just happy to not have to go hunting for 5 different remotes.

My universal remote is a keyboard ;)

Not only does it let me select videos and music, but I can also ssh from my recliner...

I got an awesome deal on a Harmony One with a pricing error. I don't know if I could ever pay the full price of it for just a remote, despite how awesome it is. But yeah, they are really really nice remotes.

Harmony - comes with a usb you plug into your laptop, configures EVERYTHING with their software and downloads it to the remote. Just got one couple of weeks ago. Sets up macros automatically so you just hit the "Watch a Movie" button and it turns on the DVD player, the TV, and the Receiver, then changes all the inputs and settings you need.
I used to have to work 4 remotes and a shitload of settings to watch a damn movie. now I just press a single button. Easy as fuckin' pie.

You want a REAL remote?

FORGET logitech.

I have a "Universal Remote" MX980. Fucking hawt. Though this is available only through a professional installer, but it can do whatever you want. Runs my home theater, lighting, etc etc etc.

I use a Harmony 880, though, hear that the 890 is a slight improvement. I would heartily recommend the 880.

So in other words it has no functionality a Harmony doesn't have and it looks worse... I suppose you recommend the Zune too?

Actually it has worlds of functionality over a harmony- but you're right 95% of people with a basic tv/dvd/game setup wouldn't use it nor probably understand it.

When you get into variables tagged onto macros and multi-zone programming and tie in other household devices via RF (blinds, fans etc etc) and you don't want to be tied to stupid pre-set macros or specific devices you get a URC or you step up into the big leagues and get into a Creston setup.

And I hate the Zune ;)

Get one with that uses radio frequency like a cordless phone instead of ir. That way you can put your home theater equipment, dvd player etc.. in a cabinet and still control everything.

Got mine on ebay for about $100
