I'm just about to get my feet wet and finally get moving on affiliate marketing, and I'm following along with NickyCakes newbie guide and pretty much doing everything he suggests. I've search a bunch for the answer to this question but haven't found it yet.

Nicky says to buy a useless domain that no one will ever see, buy hosting, and set up prosper202 on that domain. Got it.

Now say the website I want to create is a hockey equipment review blog, for example.

1) Do I need a new domain for that? Or could it be a sub-domain of the tracking domain?
2) Do I need additional hosting if it is a new domain? I was looking at the "baby" package on Hostgator which gives unlimited domains, does that mean any domain name I buy can be hosted under the same hosting plan, even if I have 5, 50, 100 sites/domain names?
3) Do I need to go with something like Hostgator for my first efforts, or is something like ZenSix's cheapest 1 year plan acceptable? I'm going to get on some AF networks and just pick an offer or two and make pages for it.
4) Say it gets to the point where I want two sites - a hockey equipment review site, and an affiliate page for facial cream. Do I need separate domains/hosting?

Sorry is this is all really basic but the hierarchy of websites (new domains vs. subdomains vs. directories) and terminology in general is just not something I understand very well. Once I can wrap my head around this I think it'll go a lot smoother...

Thanks!

New domain name. The idea is your tracking site is independent of the rest.

You can use the same one. At some point hardcore affiliate marketers start splitting their servers from what I understand but I am not at the level yet.

Does not matter. Yet keep in mind that certain web hosts might be more expensive because they are better. Hostgator I have had good experiences with.

Separate domains yes. Hosting no.

Think about it this way. If you had a store selling hockey equipment and facial cream, would you have two stores or one? Probably two (aka two domains). Would you put them in a different mall? (aka same host)

And for my shameless plug. I wrote an article about domains and hosting that will probably help you out a lot.

Also if you use hostgator I just finished an article about installing Prosper202. Hostgator is setup in a way that blocks the install so you need to get a modified version of Prosper202.

Just copy and paste my sig link. Even if my hosting article is useless to you, the Prosper installation will help you out a lot.

sorry to rez a month old thread but I ran into this problem today when I tried to set prosper up on my shared hosting from hostgator. I found this post and the link to the fix from niko's sig page does not work.

the url changed slightly, it was easily found with a little searching. if anyone tries to put prosper on their hostgator hosting and you run into a problem with not being able to partition the database, this is the fix you need. was up and running with prosper in a couple minutes after finding it.

prosper fix

hopefully this will help a newbie like myself in the futute. I am looking forward to getting more into the AM world. thanks
