Ruby on Rails gem install help

I'm about at the end of my rope...

I'm hosted on Dreamhost, and had a sweet little rails app written for me. Problem is, it needs a gem installed, and I can't figure out how to do that on Dreamhost.

All of the instructions are waaaay over my head, does anybody have any advice?

I've found a couple of tutorials, but I either don't understand them, or am getting tripped up trying to create a directory in my user/home space for the gem to install in. I keep getting "permission denied".
 


When dreamhost becomes slugglish or unreliable you are just going to have to move. I had a few rails apps there and they just couldn't handle it even though they were small...

Slicehost - worth the wait if you don't want to get your own box but you might want to get on the list now.
 
I'm figuring out where to go right now, definitely time to go to dedicated servers.

Fucking Dreamhost, keeps killing a process that takes more than 5 minutes to run.
