Hey guys,

Recently I've been getting into some list building stuff and I've heard a lot of
debate on single opt in vs double opt.

As of right now I'm going with double opt but only 13-20% of the subscribers double opt. It's a biz opp list btw.

I was wondering if any of you guys could share your experiences in this area.

Going single opt-in will let you build your list faster and be able to blast any follow-up e-mails to more people. This will give you the potential of more earnings on the list. However, you will have to deal with a higher number of complainers. Not just complaining to you, but some of these single opt-in people will complain to their ISP's, your ISP, and/or spam registries (like spamhaus). If you can handle the complaints and not lose deliverability, get blacklisted or get shutdown, this is the way to go.

If you don't want to take the risk, you should double opt-in. While there will always be complainers, the percentage of complainers is much lower with double opt-in than with single opt-in. Not only that, saying you double opt-in will improve your chances of removing any blocks, etc. that occur because of your mailing.

Note that if you plan on using bulletproof mail hosting or go offshore for your hosting, this might not be an issue.

Like Steve said:
Single Opt - Larger list, generally a little more $$$, but more complaints and greater risk of getting shutdown.

Double Opt - Cleaner lists (higher open rate), less chance of being blacklisted/shutdown - as if you get complaints you can prove to them they double opted in and everything's compliant.

Do you mean only 13-20% confirm AFTER they enter their email? If so that's terrible, make the page you send them to after they enter their email is one that says they must confirm to continue. (then after they confirm it continues the offer path).

How about both. Save your mails and upload as single opt-in's to one service. Then have your double opt-in's on an account somewhere else. Best of both worlds. BAM!

That's why I can feed my children from this business. Cause I's a thinker ;)
