Social Networking Type Site

Hi Folks!

I have another very general question about something that I know very little about. However, if you could point me in the right direction, as you have in the past, I would greatly appreciate it!

I have an idea for a social networking more like linkedin than facebook, but same general idea.

Does anyone have any experience building one of these form the ground up? Is there an easy(er) way to do it?

That's one way to do it (Drupal, Drigg, or a modified Wordpress).

The other way to do it is Social Engine (socialengine.com) if you need something already designed for social networking with ready to use plugins (much like how I use on canushoot.com or a client's site specialpeoplemeet.com)

The main difference is, if you're going to do it yourself, Drupal+drigg, Wordpress, doesn't cost you anything other than your time. Where as Social Engine starts at 250$ and goes up from there with the plugin. But if you're not a developer/designer, you're probably going to spend that much anyways on hiring one to get your site to a starting point.

If you're looking for a site-in-a-box, SE will pretty much do it, but most sites-in-a-box, look just like that.
