Spitzer's Christmas Tax Surprise

What will be interesting is to see whether any effected online companies start disqualifying potential and existing affiliates based on their location. If I had a site with an affiliate program, and I knew that of all the US, affiliates from NY were going to force me to have to add a whole new layer of recordkeeping, the simple solution is to ban affiliates from NY.

This does not sound very legal if they are only targeting the "major electronic retailers". I could also see a few ego driving CEO's say "Go ahead and try", and hopefully fight this till N.Y. gives up on the idea.

What is to stop a company like Amazon from creating two more companies. One in N.Y., and one in Calif.. You could call one AmazonNY, and one AmazonCA. Then when someone visits Amazon.com from, say N.Y., it auto forwards them to the Amazon.com website that is owned by AmazonCA. All receipts will say purchased from AmazonCA. New Yorkers do not have to pay sales tax then, or vice versa if from Calif..

i remember Frank schilling posting something about guys who own mail boxes e.t.c in new york being the main benefactors or something along that line... I dont feel like getting creative here... Vamose...

He's the worst Governor ever.. and he's only just started.

He was trying to get a law passed in NY state that allowed illegal immigrants to get a NY State Driver's license, so they would get all the benefits that tax payers get, but without paying the taxes. What the fuck?! Needless to say, it was shot down pretty quickly.

This guy is a dick. If anyone thinks I have a God complex, this guy takes the fucking cake. He's the one who as the NY state DA went against Martha Stewart, Enron, and just about every white collar company for fraud. Which was a good thing, we needed the shakeup, but he thinks that because he did that, he can do anything.

Sometimes I hate living in NY just because of douchebags like this. Same goes for Rudy Guiliani. Sure, he was a pretty damn good mayor here, and he definitely got lucky in terms of 9/11 because everyone wiped his record clean before that (in which more than 40% of the city hated him), but then he started going on this "I'm great, look what I did" tour. If you look at his consulting firm he made after leaving the mayoral position, he's been taking on some of the shadiest clients in the world (which is what these types of firms do anyway, so I'm not bashing it all that much). But now he's running for president.. Ugh. And our lovely NY Senator, Mrs. Clinton is also running for president.. another douche and a half.

I tell ya.. I wish US politics could go back to having public servants (which is what politicians SHOULD be), instead of having people who just put on a show, talk a lot of shit, and don't do anything for the country that they promise. It's all come down to a form of entertainment and who can come up with the biggest lies to sell to us, and get away with it in the end!

Oh yeah.. and without sounding like a crazy person here, I just want to add that in New York City, while smoking has been banned in all public places such as pool halls, clubs, bars, peep shows, etc. The taxes on cigarettes are INSANE.

A pack of premium cigarettes (Marlboro, Camel, etc) costs around $7.50 per pack, which means a carton of 10 packs in NY costs over $75.00 here. In Aruba, I get cartons for $10, same US cigarettes too. Also, all cigarettes in NY have these rings on the cigarette that put it out if you don't smoke it within a 15-20 second interval, so they have us on fucking "hurry up and finish it!" timers (it was put into play to stop the amount of cigarettes that cause the whole 10 house fires that crackheads cause each year for leaving their cigarettes burning near their gas stoves after passing out from the crack).

But the kicker of the whole smoking ban shit here is that now, instead of having less waste and garbage in NYC, we have an overflow of trash from discarded cigarette butts EVERYWHERE. Go to any hot spot in NYC from Thurs-Sun and outside any bar, club, loungue or social spot you will see HUNDREDS of cigarette butts in the gutter, on the curb, on the sidewalks, on the side of the buildings, etc. It's fucking nuts. And there are places to throw them out at, but there aren't any ash trays to put them out at, so there have been in increase in fires caused by cigarettes that get tossed into these cigarette garbage cans.

Also, where the country has been going through a huge cooling real estate market, NYC never cools down, ever. Rent here is on avg around $1300-$1600 per month for a STUDIO (one room with bed/couch, kitchen, table, etc, and a bathroom). Most 1-bedroom apartments go for $2k-$3k a month now. If you buy your place, say a 1BR in an avg area, you're looking at spending about $250,000-$550,000, and then you have to pay monthly "maintainence fees" of almost $1,000 a month, AFTER you've purchased your apartment. It's only a good market right now for home sellers and building owners. Homes will sell for an avg price of $750,000 now, in any of the 4 other boros (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island -- Manhattan doesn't really have houses).

Yep. That's NY for ya.

/rant. For real this time.

Jon is right. I have friends who live in NYC and they pay an insane amount of money just to live there in crappy apartments. To illustrate how expensive NYC is...

Here in bumfuck nowhere Ohio, I pay $750/mo (all utilities included except electric) for a 3 bedroom, HUGE, all hardwood floor luxury apartment in a very nice neighborhood. In NYC, this same apartment would probably go for at least 5x what I pay here.

Location, location, location. It's so fuckin true. I sure as hell ain't leaving Ohio anytime soon. Cost of living here is so dirt cheap.
