How standing might be the best anti-ageing technique - Telegraph

Surprisingly, it was sitting less, not exercising more, that was seen to lengthen telomeres. "In many countries formal exercise may be increasing, but at the same time people spend more time sitting," researchers wrote. "We hypothesize that a reduction in sitting hours is of greater importance than an increase in exercise time for elderly risk individuals.
Here's the study: Stand up for health

Who here works standing up?

I can imagine being knackered standing up for hours and how it would probably slow down my efficiency.

Standing up? Fuck no, I'm debating whether or not I should buy a little beer fridge to put beside my Lazy-Boy Recliner.

Knowing quite few people who work standing up (Surgery nurses), I disagree.

I don't know about all that shit, but since building a stand up desk my back hurts a lot less. Pretty sure my ruptured disc injury is due to many sitting hours in front of a computer from a young age.

Do you notice you move around a lot more to help you think instead of just standing still in-front of the monitor most of the time?

This is also true because gravity (which contributes to facial sagging, as you age) decreases the further something is from the Earth's mass.

Therefore, since a person's head is higher while standing that when seated, there is less downward "pull" on the face over a long period of time.

As an example, here is a picture of the world's tallest man roughhousing with the world's shortest man. Both are 19 years of age.

Nice. Personally, since hearing that sitting is so bad for me it motivated me to change my workstation setup and lifestyle.. I now have my computer monitor on the floor with the screen facing up while I lay face down on a massage table with holes cut out for my head, stomach and dick. I've never felt so good in my life.

Correlation is not causation.

Less sitting down time was strongly associated with the lengthening of telomeres. That does not imply that purely standing up would lengthen the telomeres. Less sitting down time could mean they were generally more active. These are elderly people, and which retiree just stands up still hours on end when they are not sitting down.

Telomores don't just lengthen by themselves. What other factors do you feel the study did not take account of? How could the study be better improved?

Disclaimer: I am not defending the study here and neither have I bought into the conclusion that purely standing up lengthens telomeres.

Ask waitresses how it's working out for them. Varicose veins, etc.

More shitty research. I'm sure it's government funded.

We can really go down a slippery slope here. There could be something that is good for you but in excessive amounts may be detrimental.

We can associate time lifting weights with improved muscle growth. But excessive time lifting weights without rest would also lead to injuries and slower muscle growth as well as other negative health impacts.

Just get a dog that likes to play - best thing for working from home folks stuck on a computer all day. Forces me to regularly get up and run around.
