If you type for a living as I do, don't even consider a tablet. I love my Google Nexus 7 because it's great for quick connectivity, game-playing, reading, etc. It looks cool and has a snappy OS, but the tap-tap-tap surface is not good for writing ads.

If you're looking for a workhorse, the 11" Macbook is too small for regular use. It's great if you travel a lot, though, because it's so thin and light. Learn from my mistake and buy the 13" if you have serious work to do. I had to trade up for this reason.
 


looking at getting something myself. lots of good looking choices out there or coming up like:

mba
mbp retina
carbon x1
new acer s7
zenbook infinity
sammy series 9
viao pro 13

I like w8, but i'm also diggin osx. I was thinking mba for that sexy battery life, but the retina screen is pretty nice to look at. curious for those who work full time on a mba how well it works as an only machine. so torn between that and an upcoming haswell mbpr.
 
I've been using Win 8 for the past 2 months.

Its fine but all of the metro/Start Screen & weird wild shit that it has, I do not like it. I'm on a computer, not a touchscreen tablet or want "Apps". Also thank god I installed NoScript and AntiVirus software. Have ran into 2 websites that had java driveby exploit packs on them and they saved me 100% or I would have got fucked and botted. Using OSX for 6 years and then using Windows again, you forget about how vulnerable/targeted/crap Windows is.

also PS. Does anyone know of a good linux terminal for Windows 8? I really really miss being able to run whois and nmap commands in seconds..

Because it looks like a tablet on a PC? If I want a tablet i'll just use a tablet...

I dont want to click the bottom left to get to the desktop to then open a .txt file, that's just an extra step and a waste of time. Keep the windows 8 interface on tablets and touchscreen laptops, people who need to do schoolwork or business shit dont need windows 8.

You should already be at the desktop 99% of the time if you are not on a tablet. No more steps are required to open a .txt file than Windows 7 if you are already there. The new start screen is basically just a full screen start menu.

Bought a mac book air last year and it's perfect for traveling.

I tend to skip the winters here and often stay away for about 6/7 months and the macbook air is fucking light and can handle pretty much everything I need to do for work.

Pads are useless for actual work other then checking your stats/emails etc and your phone already does that for you.

If this is what you do full-time I don't see a reason to save cash either and trust me those smaller laptops (macbook air) are perfect for traveling. It's not going to feel as extra weight you are carrying more than any would do.
 
Ok you guys are right, there's no way I can get any serious work done on a tablet.

I'm gonna go with a 13" laptop (still have to figure out which brand) and I'll get a Kindle PaperWhite for reading when I'm outdoors...

This gay ad sold me on the Kindle. I must say I really like the look of the e-ink screen.

Macbook Airs are beautiful, get a used one if new is out of budget. There's no way I'd get a 2nd hand laptop ordinarily but I checked out a few Airs and all seemed to work perfectly. I prefer the 11 inch, but haven't done any trips over 3 weeks with it. Obviously you'll look cooler with one of these too compared to that blue thing above :cool:

The basic Kindle is perfect for reading on the beach. Ultra lightweight, fits in shorts pockets and works in the sun. Super easy to convert pdfs too- just email them to your Kindle email.
 
I'd get a small laptop. But if you're going for a tablet might as well upgrade your phone to a phablet like the samsung galaxy mega.
