Ok, the wife has asked me to try and do this, and I need to deliver.

Daughter's b-day party coming up, the theme is iCarly (doh!)

We want to have several video cameras positioned inside the house, outside, everywhere, with one master "feed" into a giant monitor outside, so at any point in time you can see the image of every feed and record it, play back, etc.

This entire process is smelling like a video surveillance system, but there has to be an easier way to accomplish this.

Can the entire thing be done wirelessly? And can low-end web cams do the job? Any software suggestions? Stand alone video cameras could work, but this would require video feeds and wires everywhere, not a good idea when you have kids running around... I'm thinking a wireless web cam x 12 connected to a laptop outside, hooked up to a plasma or something?

Has anybody done anything even remotely similar before?

they have systems at costco for like 500 bucks that come with 8 to 12 camera. video surveillance yes.

Looked at Costco already, they have a 4 camera set up but it isnt wireless... needs the ethernet direct connection I believe...

Are you planning on doing this long term? Or the cameras are just a short solution, because my experience with just about every WIFI based IP camera has been horrible. None the less, take a look at the Axis m1011-w, both ethernet and wireless and they're cheap and good quality. There's tons of commercial and open sources DVR applications that will work with these cameras and do basically what you want above.
