Read the full backstory here.

Ok, so in a nutshell - I have this credit card blog. Gets about 9-10k uniques per month, but is only making - at best - $500 / month. And really, it's been ages since it did that - this month is looking especially bad with revenues of just over $100, and that's all in adsense. So yeah, pretty grim. It's hardly suprising - I've been neglecting the fuck out of it for months now. It was getting 15k uniques and was a PR 4 at its height (I was recently demoted to PR3) - still nothing spectacular, I know, but considerably better than it is now.

Anyway, here is my plan to get things moving again. To be honest, I'm a bit high at the moment, so forgive me if I suddenly jump from talking to you to talking to myself.

1. Figure out which valuable keywords you already rank for and which ones you should target. I mentioned this in my initial post in the other thread, but a really large proportion of the traffic that I get is not actually credit card related. I published articles on all sorts of topics that were often only loosely related to finance, and paid no attention to keywords. I guess what I'm saying is, I don't want to just grow the quantity of my taffic, I want to grow the quality of it as well.

2. Post a quality article on the site (of at least 500 words) every day. I'll make an effort to link to other related posts to increase pageviews and decrease bounce rate.

3. Publish at least 15 guest posts on other high quality, established finance blogs and include as much juicy anchor text as you can without being spammy.

4. Build your blogroll. This one kinda follows on from 3, because you can try to hit up those bloggers for a blogroll exchange after they publish your guest post.

5. Finish webapp. Ok, if you didn't read the backstory, you're probably a bit lost now. Basically, a while back I started working on a web app - a simple financial management system. I launched the blog about 18 months ago because I figured it would be a good way to establish the domain for a couple of months while I put the 'finishing touches' on the web app.

Well, the app's development kind of had a few false starts, and stalled a bunch of times, but it's now at the point where it's about 90% done. Sounds good, but it's been like that for about 6 months now. I feel like I've had a some kind of mental block stopping me from getting it done. I put so much work and effort into it that I'm worried I wont be able to take it if it doesn't succeed.

But fuck that shit. I'm going to work like a dog and get it done over the next couple of weeks. If it fails, it fails, but at least I gave it a shot. (actually, this should probably be priority #1)

6. Blog commenting / Forum posting. I figure that assuming the comments/posts are actually quality, they should bring in some decent backlinks and maybe even a bit of traffic.

7. Paid links. Don't really know what I'm doing here, so I'll have to be careful. Part of me wonders if I shouldn't just save my money and just try to push the 'guest post' side of things.

A question for the paid links gurus out there - is it better to pay for a blogroll link or just get a 'paid post'?

Well that's about all I can think of right now. Please chime in with any thoughts/suggestions.

Oh, one thing - I've recently discovered Yahoo Site Explorer (it's amost as awesome as the Google Keywords tool), and I checked the backlinks on my site.

http://www.mydomainname.com/blog has 7600 inlinks
http://mydomainname.com/blog has 11000 inlinks

Is this bad? Do I want them spread out like this, or do I want them concentrated on a single domain? If so, how do I do that? Any help would be much appreciated.

One important thing I forgot to outline are my goals, so here they are for Auguest...

Quantity of Traffic.

Currently 9300 uniques per month. Want to get it to 15k uniques / month by the time September rolls around.

Quality of Traffic.

Currently 1.6 pages per visit, want to increase that to 3 pages per visit. Want to decrease the bounce rate, from 80% to 60%. And want to increase the time spent on site per user from 1 min 20 seconds to 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Revenues

July's revenues look like they are going to be especially bad. No affiliate sales yet, I did have someone doing banner advertising for $100/month but they dropped out. My only earner is Adsense, and I've made about $130 so far. If I'm *really* lucky, it will be $150 by the end of the month.

I want to double revenues for August - so $300 total. I know, $300 is pretty mediocre in and of itself, but if can keep doubling revenues once every month or two, things should be looking pretty sweet when 2010 rolls around.

Just a small tip to improve your income, many CPA networks will give you $30 or so per lead for a FREE credit card report, as this is very in your niche, you should check that out and see how that goes, even if 10 people do it a month, $300 extra in your pocket :)

You should have a 301 redirect from your www domain to your non www domain. Also ditch Adsense. You should be able to clean up running free credit report offers or credit card signup offers.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

A quick update:

I've changed the wordpress theme and generally made an effort to revamp the site. While it's still too early to say for sure, I think it has been a good improvement. Bounce rate is waaaaaay down - from the mid 80's to the single digits! Pageviews per users are up dramatically, and yesterday I had 450 uniques - haven't had that kind of traffic for over a month.

Alex, I couldn't find the offer you were talking about. The closest I could find is the myfico affiliate program, which has a product that offers a 30 day free trial. Are there any affil networks besides cj that I should be a part of? Anyway that myfico program has pretty good EPC, so I will try to get some ads up in the next few days and see how it goes.

Aesin, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I haven't been having much luck with cc offers lately. Thanks for the tip on the 301 redirect, I will try to hook that up later today.

Please keep the advice coming guys, I really appreciate your help.

Wow congrats with the dramatic improvement.

I suggest you join some CPA networks like Ads4Dough. I'm an affiliate with them and they have around 5 credit card / credit related offers.

congrats man. Join azoogle & copeac. Bounce rate to single digits is impressive. Wat did you change in wordpress?

Thanks guys.

I applied for copeac and azoogle, didn't apply for ads4dough, because the last news update on the site is from early 2008 (wtf?)... still waiting to hear back from them both, but I don't see why I wouldnt get in.

John: I changed from a traditional blog theme to a 'magazine' style theme. Makes my site look a lot more professional. I'm almost a bit suspicious that Google analytics is getting it wrong somehow, because the bounce rate has been under 2% ever since the change! Still need to put ads into it though.

if the analytics is getting the data then the chances are that the code is installed properly. But a 2% bounce rate seems to be too good. just google for similar cases and see if there is any prob with that.

Thanks guys.

I wouldn't count out a4d, they are very much alive and kicking. Plus, the owner and some managers are pretty active on here, which has it's own benefits.

John, yeah I Googled it yesterday - couldn't find anything. I really hope it''s legit, I suspect that it might be.

The old theme had the last 10-15 posts on the front page in full, while this new one only has one full post, and 20-30 excerpts. The other thing is that it's much more appealing, visually speaking. Better color scheme, and lots of pretty photos showing. I think my old design must have been scaring people away :( No wonder my Google rankings were falling! Anyway, I'm getting my next days worth of GA in 4 hours, so I'll keep everyone posted.

Jarred, thanks for the heads up. I'm going to sign up now.

Well, another day, another awesome bounce rate...

I'll post my bounce rates for the past 10 days.

21st: 82.52%
22nd: 81.46%
23rd: 84.24%
24th: 21.55% <--- Redesign
25th: 0.95%
26th: 1.22%
27th: 1.94%
28th: 1.07%
29th: 0.71%
30th: 1.13%
31st: 2.13%

Are these not suspiciously good bounce rates? Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they are legit.

Still haven't heard back from any of the affil networks...

What do you mean blocking my own traffic? As in, discounting any visits to the site that I make myself? No, I'm not, but I doubt that would make much of a difference as I'm getting between 350-450 uniques per day.

Well I got accepted to Azoogle, nice! They still need to assign me an affiliate manager, but I had a look through their programs, and it looks like there are a couple of 'free' credit report offers that you guys were talking about. Looking forward to trying em out on my site.

Nothing major to report, but I thought I'd post a quick update to let you all know that I'm still at it. Traffic has stayed strong since I installed the new theme. On weekdays I'm generally getting between 350 and 400 uniques with about 3 pageviews per person. This isn't a massive increase over what I was getting, but it's still significant. I'm back over 10k uniques per month, and on an upwards trend again, which is really encouraging. Also, bounce rate is still in the single digits.

On the down side, I haven't made much progress with the monetization side of things. I'm still waiting for azoogle to assign me an affiliate manager. Copeac has been a bit tough to get ahold of too, probably because I'm non US.

Anyway will post a more thorough update soon.
