:love-smiley-085:"free" (well, more like pirated) satellite TV was neat for us - made well over 100k with it alone. also, WoW instructions.. if you market that stuff in the right way it sells pretty well. otherwise our strategy is different from most marketers since we don't pick a product and then market it somewhere - we rather make a site which will get traffic and then pick some product that matches the audience interests somewhat as a CPC alternative.
Your best bet would be to leave clickbank alone entirely. Too much competition for average conversions. I make a couple of thousand a month out of CB but my affiliate marketing earnings skyrocketed when I realized that the real money is in physical products.

LOL. Polling a forum to find out the best vertical in a network? Not sure this would have made my list of ideas on how to identify that information. 
clickbank is all about weight loss and emarketing ... looking at the gravity some hit 3000 damn
I've heard they focus mainly on gaming products... and unless there are millions of fully employed gamers out there, it's going to be a tough job getting teenagers to pay for services like that

Yes. You need to collect the email addresses from as many of your visitors as possible. Better chance at the sale due to the ability to converse/reach them several times (instead of the single hit to your site which wont usually convert).
As well as the ability to promote other products to them in the future for larger earnings.
May as well build up your own "client" base through your sites.
Clickbank is only a payment processor.
The merchants are responsible for the quality of their products. If they like to sell garbage, then CB has little chances to do some against when it goes live.
Now with the new TOS they will most probably clean out the market place.
As for the best category, not exactly an important point as you can make money in any niche, depending if YOU are in there, have some authority status and a network and a list.
