Thoughts on second hand jewelery

Women and their rings. Hah.

Just one of the many reasons why I would never get married.

Hah, men much better than you and I have claimed that over the ages. The pursuit of pussy will always get the best of you, as it did me, and as it does all men.

1> buy it >> take the rock & get it reset in a new band so it's a "new ring"

2> buy it >> give it to mom >> mom gives it to you & it's now a family heirloom instead of damaged goods

This part sounds obvious to me but I'm going to say it anyways ... If she's superstitious about the bad juju on the ring, don't marry her crazy ass.

Lol, you guys crack me up. I have to wonder if it's not so much a choice of not getting married, but rather, not having it as an option.

Want some advice from a female perspective? Good, I'm glad you said yes:

1. Not wanting to get screwed buying overpriced jewelry doesn't make you a cheapass. I can understand that you don't want to get raped paying retail for jewelry. The markup on fine jewelry (even at regular wholesale) is insane.

2. ASK HER!!!!! This is about her, so she needs to be part of the decision making process. It is quite possible that she won't have a problem with a second-hand ring from a divorce if she falls in love with the ring. When it comes down to it, it's about how much she likes the ring. If you want to have any chance of your marriage lasting, you need to be up front with her, and getting her involved will make her feel special too :)

3. The idea of buying the ring then trading it in is not a bad one, but my suggestion would be to take it to the jeweler that has the ring that you were going to buy, and ask if you can do a full/partial trade for it (before buying it from the guy). I'm assuming that your GF was part of the decision making process for the ring you were planning to buy, if so, this would be a solid choice.

If your GF didn't pick out the ring you are planning to buy, um, please rethink your stragegery.

Alternatives:
Buy an estate piece. Yes, it is still someone's old piece of jewelry, but when you add the word "estate," it sounds much more romantic.

Get to the Tucson Gem and Mineral show in February and buy at REAL wholesale and dealer prices. PM me if you want more info about this option. I was a dealer there for over 10 years, and I may still know some people.

Have you thought about buying something other than a diamond? Maybe I'm just jaded from knowing the truth about the biz, but diamonds just don't do it for me. I hated my platinum and diamond wedding ring (even before the divorce), so now I have a kick ass tanzanite and Australian black opal ring that is WAY cooler than a production diamond ring.

Ask your girlfriend if she has to have a diamond, or if there are any other stones that she loves. You could save 100's or 1000's of $ just by asking this question. The ironic thing about some other stones is that some of them really are way more rare than diamonds, but the market demand and acceptance is not as high, which = less $ for the jewelry.

A female perspective:

If it's a stone that she loves, just have it reset and PRESTO! new ring. All jewelry is recycled over and over - you just happen to know the pedigree of this particular piece. If I were your girl, I would not want you to overspend on an unimportant thing like a ring because money is better used to set up a household or for emergency savings. If you MUST throw away money on jewelry, buy a fabulous bracelet with the cost difference.

If your GF didn't pick out the ring you are planning to buy, um, please rethink your stragegery.

Um, I'm not a chick, but this is BS in my book. If you're ready to marry the girl, ideally you have bought jewelry for her before, know what jewelry she already has and likes to wear, and have a good sense for her general aesthetic -- including how important size, sparkle, and all that jazz would be to her.

If you can't confidently pick out a ring you KNOW she will like, then you haven't been paying attention. And if she's a controlling bitch that micromanages every detail of your life and will be disappointed with anything she didn't pick out herself (i.e. the quoted advice), move on, it's not worth it.

To answer the original question, I think 2nd-hand jewelry is totally fine if the stone fits your previously established criteria and you are comfortable being honest about it. Again, you should know your girl well enough to have a good sense of how she would feel about it. I would advise resetting it of course, but that's fairly cheap.

For the record, I bought new but saved for about 18 months and shopped around very aggressively.

yep, you got a point there... since gay marriage isn't legal in every state, a lot of WF peeps don't have the option yet ;)

i have laughed one hundred and one times about the responses i've been hearing about gold and diamonds. Take it from someone who has been in the industry for over 7 years.

Diamonds are one of the best investments people can make, check your rapaport list. Diamonds have ONLY been going up in value. (Ever since Debeers launched "a diamond is for ever" campaign) People have held on to their diamonds, and with less people selling them to jewelers for cash, the rareness has gone up = not too much in circulation = Higher Value.

Let me tell you what the most popular way to buy an engagement ring is. You and your girl go to a mall, with a jewelry store in it. But not "just" for the ring. Go there just to shop, and you just so happen to stop by, just to browse.

The FIRST thing girls usually do, is checkout the Engagement rings. She will either cal you over and try to show you something she "likes" (cough)

If she doesn't, that just means you gotta do your thing, "babe, come here for sec... what do you think about these rings???"

You gotta let her know that you are JUST looking, you are not buying anything. Do this just to see what her taste is.

Then you can come back to the store, if the price is reasonable, and buy it.

What ever you do, dont buy it from Zales, or Macy's... One of the BIGGEST rip off stores i know. Go to a REAL jewelry store, with a real jeweler.

What ever you do, dont get the biggest rock for less than $1,000. what your really getting is something that wont even shine, we call those shits, "Champagne Diamonds"...haha when ever a customer asks me why the diamond doesnt shine, i let them know that they are buying a "Champagne Diamond"... it just sounds soo much more presentable...lol That shit is garbage.

Hitt me up if you want to know more.

They say it's bad luck to use secondhand engagement rings. However, I don't believe in luck. But still, if your girl ever found out she might not be too happy.

Still, at that price buy it up and resell it. There's a little extra cash towards a new ring.

The truth is... if you don't know enough about the woman to know whether or not she would flip out or be pissed about you buying a second hand ring, you don't know her enough to be married to her.
You havien't done enough split tests.

Running a campaign (Dating) for 3 years and being ready for (white label) marriage are two different things. This info would be a part of her value system, which it seems you don't know from top to bottom. Unless you have got all your bases covered...get more data.

On the otherhand, the used idea sucks. Tradition says buy a ring that is the equivalent to 3 times your salary (not sure). (Edited out that stuff) If the woman can't accept/love/cherish/marry you where you actually are, now, what will make her do so in the future.

Then again you could just be a person who likes to look good and prompting your own insecurities on her through the purchase of said ring. She could be a cheapskate, who knows?

The thing is, if you have to ask about this, as nice as saving $3200 sounds, you probably shouldn't do it.

Hi alexb
It would be better not to buy secondhand ring from a divorced person Do U really love ya girlfriend? If yes, then buy a new one which is cheap at price or the price U can afford it may not be a diamond but a new ring . she would like to have it more, than U being cheap buying a ring frm divorcy and gifting it to her.leave alone the question if she comes to know that it is old one or new one watever ,tell me would U be happy seeing that ring on her hand can U forget frm were U bought it ,this guilt feeling will never leave U,
Now U may not have enuff money to buy the ring U designed but Money can be earned any time but A guilt feeling can never be overcome that U could not buy a new ring and have brought an old one .think about it.

Keep Smiling
