To host or not to host

I am not necessarily a noob but, this is a noob type question.

Since I started in this rat race a few years ago I have been hosting all of my sites that I have made. Recently, like a lot of people, I have been using wordpress as my CMS, and even making decent landing pages within it.

I am in the early stages of developing into a new niche and I am wondering if I should go through the trouble of hosting it myself again. What are the cons related to simply hosting this site on wordpress.com with a keyword.wordpress.com URL and if it picks up, switch to a real domain?

Any input is appreciated but please keep the conjecture to a minimum.

Cheers,
JM

well, you can't 301 a wordpress site to a host if it picks up. plus you probably wouldn't want to stifle any success you're having by migrating platforms and locations. plus no widgets. />conjecture

My plan wouldn't be to kill the site, I would simply start a new one with similar interests and link from the old to new.

My real worry is that wordpress.com being a free service is "spammier" than a hosted site.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is this a case, or does wordpress.com blogs actually rank better than self-hosted sites?

Host it yourself. Putting your money sites where do you don't have full control of them is just setting yourself up to get screwed.

I don't think you can edit anything on wordpress.com

if you want to add a php script to do something out of the basic function of wordpress you won't be able to do so

If I'm not wrong your can't install plugins

I can't find a reason not to host your own website/s, if your project works this will be the domain which gets traffic so you want to be in control of everything

There seems to be a number of plugins that are available to do almost everything that I need to do.

My only reason NOT to host it myself is that it removes one more maintenance item from my to-do list.

Yeah this is what I am thinking too. I was hoping that there would be enough response on here telling me not to worry. Wishful thinking on my part.

Well I am off to research a good dropped domain and start setting up a new WP site.

Cheers and thanks for the help,

JM
