Tracking coupon codes...how?

I have a list of highly targeted customers in the wedding market and i wanted to leverage my list by providing them really awesome deals with local businesses related to the wedding industry, limousine rentals, flourists, suits, catering, etc, you get the idea. Now if i make a deal with a business that, if i send them customers, i'd like 15% of the sale.

So, say in the email or phone call, i give my list a 'coupon code' that gives them 25% off a businesses catering service.

The problem i keep thinking about is that, if my list of customers goes to this catering business with our coupon code, how do i know if they used the coupon without the catering business going behind my back and not using the coupon code?

I simply want to figure out a way i can track the number of times my coupon codes are used or even if i got the sale.

Or do i have to simply rely on an 'honor system' where the business will tell me who used the coupon code and get paid for the referral?

If you guys can help me sort this problem out, that would be amazing. Thanks!

anyone know anything?

was my question confusing, should i be more clear?

let me know, thanks.

maybe you could track clicks on the "show coupon" or "print coupon" button or whatever you have. that way you would at least know how many coupons were viewed/printed. it still doesn't give you tracking of how many were actually redeemed, but you would have a number to work from when getting reports from the vendors.

thanks for your feedback jeff,

I will definitely be tracking the clicks to see how many people actually printed out the coupons, but i'd also like to find out if there's a system or a third party service that allows me to track the final conversion as well.

the only way (as far as i'm aware) is if you actually handle the transaction. you sell the coupon to your clients (like groupon) and the merchants honor the coupon/discount. otherwise, there's no way to get your merchants to honestly report to you how much they have to pay you.

good luck

Referring customers through your website might be the best way. You could have customers give their contact information and then pass it along to the complementary businesses to whom you're referring them.

You'd get less for a lead as opposed to a sale, but you'll get more leads than sales so it might balance out especially since you won't get ripped off by the other businesses.

@learn2b, that's also a good point, i could simply sell the leads as well.

I will probably choose the solution where my list won't be bombarded by businesses offering things left and right, but rather giving the list a choice to take action on the deal or not. Essentially like groupon. It seems to be the least spammy.
