What exactly do you want to measure? uniques? page views? geo origin? URL origination? URLs viewed while on site? exit URL?
Statcounter.com achieves this an is free but only maintains 500 page loads at that price. It also monitors keyword searches that land on your site. I like it but then it is what I am accustomed to, it is also real time stats.

+1 for statcounter. Although they do force you to backlink to them now.
You can install invisible code. Not real sure how that is a back link. Nowhere for a user to click to them. Is it considered a backlink when it is all invisible? Not a smart ass question just a question in search of knowledge.
they don't force you to link back, there's the option to use a button or an invisible counter, and as far as can I remember it's been this way for more than 2 years
Trust me you can update Awstats at any time you wish: click "Update Now" at the top of your Awstats screen next to "Last Update". Look for it.
