Well, I'm going to start my internet marketing experience after 6 months of research, and I'm planning to use hostgator for my domain/hosting. They have a unlimited domains plan, but I've read that it is misleading because you will run out of bandwidth. BUT, hostgator claims to have unlimited bandwidth, so will I run into this problem? More importantly, I need to save as much money as possible, and I don't expect to receive much traffic, so is it a good idea for me to get the unlimited domains plan? I have many domains that I wish to create, but can't afford to host each one. What should I do?

Also don't tell me to test it, because I might waste my money which is very limited at the moment.

Unless you are planning on running a youtube clone or torrent site you arent going to come close to hitting any serious bandwidth usage, even with dozens or even a couple hundred sites. When they say "Unlimited" that is really just a sales tactic, if you were ever to really serioulsy test the limits of "unlimited" they'd kick you off and try and sell you a leased server before they would let you utilize an etire server for 10 bucks a month.

from their ToS

8.) Bandwidth Usage
You are allocated a monthly bandwidth allowance. This allowance varies depending on the hosting package you purchase. Should your account pass the allocated amount we reserve the right to suspend the account until the start of the next allocation, suspend the account until more bandwidth is purchased at an additional fee, suspend the account until you upgrade to a higher level of package, terminate the account and/or charge you an additional fee for the overages. Unused transfer in one month cannot be carried over to the next month.

On Hostgator the difference between the 1 domain plan and the Baby unlimited domain plan is $3/month, which is less than the cost of the 1 domain plan. That means if you plan on hosting two or more domains, it makes sense to pay the extra $3.

Right now there's a code on the homepage good for 20% off however long you pay in advance, so you're getting it cheap.

There are other inexpensive hosts that allow unlimted domains (search ZenSix here).

As mentioned by others, unless you're doing some intensive stuff, it's very unlikely that you're going to bumping against bandwidth ceilings. If you are going to be doing that stuff, double check the TOS of your prospective host and make sure that you're in the clear.

You'll never get close to the bandwidth. However, you'll crush the CPU usage (especially if you run a lot of Wordpress blogs) long before that and you'll get an email to the effect of:

You're account has been suspended due to a high CPU load. Either upgrade or remove the scripts loading the server
Or something like that. I got one a long time ago, gave Hostgator the finger and got a dedicated server.

Hostggator blows but if you really want to host there fine.

Dont host your domains in the same place you register them. Its like putting all your eggs in one basket.

Use namecheap or better yet Moniker for your domains. Moniker is running a $7.59 special until May31st on .coms.

I wouldn't deal with HostGator. Usually you get what you pay for and paying $3 a month won't get you good service.

You must have some pretty big plans to be worrying about unlimited domains and running out of bandwidth.

Baby steps man, baby steps.

For starting out, it is just fine. I lasted over a year on HostGator before moving to a managed VPS, now, even if my traffic and CPU went down, I don't think I'd go back because I enjoy the control having a VPS gives me.
