I do a ton of boring press releases for SEO. They work extremely well for ranking new sites and medium to difficult keywords over time...which will eventually drive traffic. However, I like your strategy...which will also work for SEO...but it should drive a ton of traffic directly! Plus, i am sure it will be way more exciting. And get a ton more backlinks.
